People say "the OC" referring to Orange County. "I'm going to the OC." "I'm going to the Orange County". It makes no sense when you type out Orange County. I think most of it is from the show but a lot of people now refer to the area as "the OC" it should just be "OC". That would be like saying "the LA" when referring to Los Angeles.

Hmm people in Cali do say "the 5" "the 91" "the 55". But that only pertains to southern CA. You must have been talking to people in northern CA.

I went to school in Washington, and I was used to adding "the" to highways (the 10, the 101, the 5). It was weird to hear everyone up there talking about "Cali" (which I had never heard before) and adding I- to freeways (I-10, I-5). Regional speech patterns are always a little funny.

I'm from Washington, and I've always heard it called Orange County. No one up here calls it The OC. It must just be because of the TV show, why people are calling it that where you are.

The I in I-5 is short for Interstate; otherwise, we use the word highway for state roads. We never say "the" in front of a road number - we would say Highway 101 or I -101, or (less commonly) Route 101, but never "the" 101. That sounds strange, to hear it spoken of in that way. Sometimes we just refer to the road by the number itself, like I-405: Take 405 south to I-90, then go west to I-5, then north to Highway 2.....
