If a dog dislikes a person there is a reason. They can since things we can't

If, as you say, (1) this is a one-time occurrence, (2) the dog tried to get away before growling and didn't snap or bite, and (3) your dog deferred to you and stopped when you indicated that preference, sounds pretty normal and nothing to worry about. All dogs get nervous at some point. The guy is probably a creep and your dog picked up on it. My dog that would break out of the yard and visit the teachers/cooks/students/staff at a nearby elementary school and was thrilled to have new visitors at the house, went into snarling fits and chased off a burglar that was trying to get into our garage. Some dogs just know. Sounds like you have a great dog. If it becomes a habit or your dog won't stop when you tell him to, then you will need to worry about it, but right now I wouldn't be concerned.

Yes. Growling is a direct warning that a bite may follow. Whether he will ever follow that growl with a bite, you don't know. It is not something you want to find out. Consult a qualified trainer or behaviorist that can work with fears/phobias. Now that he has had the experience of growling at someone, he is more likely to try it again. The more times he does it, the worse it gets. Maybe it was a freak incident, but to me it sounds like the early signs of a problem, and a possible liability for your store.

Well since the guy scared him the dog had to growl because he feels the guy is not a nice person. And its nothing to worry about. Its a stranger, the dog doesnt know him.

You should be proud of your dog. Dogs are good at judging people's character. Trust your dog's instinct. Stay away from that person as much as possible. Here in the Philippines, some people eat dog's meat, and most of the dogs here recognize these persons and suddenly turn hostile towards them. I thought it was just some kind of a joke when I heard about this, but I experienced this first hand when some of my uncles ate what they called "azucena" a specialty dog's meat dish (maybe comes from the Tagalog word "aso" which means dog), and the dogs all of a sudden turned hostile to my uncles.

HM....I would be a little suspicious. See, a dog can sense fear, and I'm guessing someones personality along with that. So maybe that person just didn't like dogs? Or was a drug dealer...or was some other crazy thing, but really, you shouldn't worry about it unless you see him again, then i would get suspicious and keep and eye out. Just in case. See, i had an experience with my friends dog, Annie. See, shes so friendly, and loves cats, people, and other dogs. Shes so sweet and one of my best buds! Well these people who stay in front of us (this is where we camp) and they have two dogs. Well when i went to take her for a walk, when we camp to that camper (their two dogs were inside and the people we like, somewhere else) she started growling and pulling me towards my friends trailer again. Well my friend Jeremy was with me and we were both like 'wtf? Whats wrong Annie?!' and she pulled out of her collar dashing back to my friends trailer. She actually did that twice. I started having suspicions but i got over it. (even now i still watch out)

All I have to say is trust your dog. My dogs have done that a couple of times and the people turned out to be completely wierd and really bad for my family. They have a better instinct about people than we do a lot of times. So I would just watch for red flags from this guy and just be careful around him.

no don't worry... Dogs have very good scenses of personality, do you know the person? Dogs can tell if a person is trustworthy or not. If they growl to a stranger, and don't usually growl, it means that they probably aren't a trustworthy person to the dog.

there was something going on with that guy your dog picked up on. i have learned over the many years of handling dogs to pay attention to what they have to say. if the dog continues to growl at other people then a would be concerned. it may be that he was nervous because he was not on his own turf but watch him.

He could have just smelled another dog and got mad. Or maybe your dog was having a bad day. Or maybe that guy was Satan in a man's body. Nothing to be afraid of... unless it's Satan... then be very worried.
