A 12 year old girl would be good for American Girl Magazine. They talk about real life issues but keep it PG. And for the boy try Sports Illustrated for Kids, or Nickelodeon Magazine.

try sports illustrated for kids for the boy and something like teen galmour for the girl.. teen glamour or glamour girl.. i can't be sure.. they put an emphasis on other things beside weight. also try self magazine.. not geared for kids but better than most mags on the market.

when i was about 10ish my mom ordered "american girl" magazines. They have a lot of neat stuff for that age group and it doesnt send out the message that you have to be stick thin and stuff like that.
