He ment to say 1989 Ford Escort GT, but put Explorer by mistake.It is a 1.9L EFI HO, 5 speed.
The Car in the pic, is the 89 Escort GT that is having problems right now.

There's only 3 reasons a car will not start:
1) It is not getting gas.
2) It is not getting spark.
3) The battery won't turn it over.
Charge the battery, and add some fresh gas. If it doesn't turn over quickly and solidly, you may need a battery. Maybe a jump-start will do it, but you're best off with a solid battery with a fresh charge. A battery charger is a great investment for about $30...Wal-Mart, Pep Boys, or whatever.....
If it DOES turn over, but doesn't start, pull off one of the spark-plug wires (at night works best!) and hold it close to the engine or some large metal piece, and have somebody turn the key. If the spark is bright and blue, you are getting enough spark....if it's not bright & blue, you may not be. Obviously no spark at all means no spark.....coil may be bad, or a short circuit in that system. Don't hold the wire close to the end, as you may get a shock! Not enough to hurt you, but a fun little shock.
If it has enough spark, try taking one of the spark plugs out, and see if you smell gas. If you don't then your (injection or carb?) is malfunctioning, and should be checked out. If you smell gas, good. If you have been trying for a long time, the cylinders may be flooded, so let them sit a while. Once they are clear of gas, try again.
If you figure out WHICH of the systems is malfunctioning, you will be MUCH closer to getting the problem resolved!

The first place to check is the battery voltage. Most batteries fully charged read 14.5 volts. Use a volt meter and crank the engine. If it falls below 10.5 volts when cranking, there is not enough left to fire the electronic ign. and if it has fuel injection that won't work either. If that works then pull a plug wire, crank the engine to check for spark at the plug. If you have spark at the plug when you crank then pull the plug. Look at it and see if its wet or dry. If its wet then check the smell. Does it smell like gas. If its dry you have a fuel problem, If its wet and its gasoline have it towed to you mechanic. Its most likely not a simple problem. This is all that I can say for a general problem. I'm sorry but just saying it cranks and won't start is not enough information. If you can't check the car with the information I have given, then please take the car to a mechanic who knows how to look for the problem. The time for easy answers on cars is long gone. My dad had a problem simular.
On the left fender well(Drivers Side)
There is a plug with 5--6 wires plugged into a little box,this might be a relay of some sort.
One of the wires was lose in the plug,it was starting to break off but you cannot see it til it does.
Wiggly this with the key on and see if you hear the throttle body sensor opening or any noise..
If this doesn't help maybe someone elses answer might

there is a no start procedure for a no start must have fuel pressure and the crank sensor must be checked and several things must be diagnosed first , don't start changing parts cause someone says to it must be properly diagnosed , take to the dealer u will be money a head or a good ASE shop have them give you an estimate first then make sure that what they say is wrong will be the only cost best to go to the dealer they have the properly diagnosed computers to do this no guessing this stuff could be fuel pump , fuel pump relay, crank sensor bad set of plug wires , bad gas, plugged fuel filter and so on, so see it needs to be checked properly, and will save you money in the long run, the dealer can only charge you for what it takes to fix it, not every part till they get it right OK, good luck

Ford didn't have an explorer in 1989, they came out in 1990.
Anyway, it's the 4.0L engine. in 1989 they still had the brono II.
If it's the 4.0L engine, the entire ignition module is at fault, same goes for the bronco II.

Try the PCM relay or the fuel pump relay, see if its getting fuel and or spark. A more reliable mechnaic in your area should help.
