If you know the county were she passed away you can go to the county website and do a public record search. Not all counties provide this but many do. There is no fee for this if you are doing a legitament search. Also you could go to the county public records office and obtain the information usually a nominal fee. Good Luck

Search the internet. If you know her name and where she was born or died you can find free web sites that will show the date of death and birth and social security number. Once you have that you can find more info about her. If he doesnt know her full name or where she was born or died then go back to the company/place where he was adopted from. Now that she is dead they should be able to release all information about her to him.

Unfortunately, in all the genealogy research I have done, I have never found a "free" place to obtain death certificates. In order to get a death certificate, you must know the exact date of death and the exact full name of the deceased. Most (not all) states charge somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 for birth & death records. A good place to start is www.ancestry.com or www.genealogy.com. Another option is to do a google or yahoo search for the Vital Statistics department in the state she died in.

If you live in the same county that she passed away in you can go to the Register of Deeds, you won't be able to get it for free, but you can get it for less than $ 15

Since that is your husbands biological mother, he should be able to request it but he might have to say that it is for medical reasons, i.e. his health or his children if you have any or for any furture children. You should check with your states policies reguarding vital and death records.

i don't think you can get a death certificate for free anywhere. but the easiest way to get a copy is to call the city she died in and ask for it. it's usually only a nominal fee (5-15 dollars)
