According to my aunt the perfect Catholic, animals do not have souls. In my opinion humans do not have souls the animals do.

Genesis does talk about man caring for creation but Jesus was making a point about not worrying and described how God even cares for the sparrow, knowing when one falls to the ground. If He cares enough to notice then so should we.
Bottom line, a respect for God results in a healthy respect for His creation. Those who mistreat animals have shown to have very destructive tendencies towards other people as well.

i believe it is implied when god grants us dominion over the plants and animals in genesis. if you leave your house and trust me to look after it... does that entitle me to set it on fire? to starve your pets?
it is my opinion that god would be disappointed if we weren't careful with such a gift. just because we are described as his crowning acheivement doesn't mean we should think more highly of ourselves than our cousins in creation, does it?
there is also matthew 10:29 where jesus tells us we matter more than sparrows, and god knows how and when each sparrow falls... why should tigers be worth less? it isn't devaluing sparrows either, he described a practice poor children followed to earn money for their families. it was how humans valued sparrows... from the article i link:
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father. God notices, cares, and values what humans consider of least value in the created order! The tiniest of birds does not come to the end of its life and drop from the sky without the awareness and consent of God. The Creator of billions of spinning stars, planets, and galaxies has an eye on the tiny sparrow. "
at any rate, how are any of us supposed to know when you're being insincere with your question? clearly you want the answer "it doesn't". i believe it does (incidentally i'm not a christian nor am i alone)... you can have a positive or negative view of any scripture if you set your mind to it.

in genesis, it is where God placed adam on the earth and told him to name and care for the animals.
in the new testament, it is allegorical when Jesus says that God knows of the passing of a sparrow: the most humble and common of all the birds.
if God cares, then we should as well.

First few pages. Of course, it's open to interpretation. God intended us to "tend and keep the garden", as well as come up with names for everything, but your interpretation may vary on that issue.
Why don't you care about animals suffering?

The book of Proverbs is largely a contrast between the righteous and the evil man.
Proverbs 12:10:
A righteous man regards the life of his beast: but the mercies of the wicked are cruel.

What's the bible have to do with you not being a douche? I eat animals on a daily basis, but I still don't want to see any living creature suffering, that's just sick.

Proverbs has a wonderful verse about that -
"The righteous one is caring for the soul of his domestic animal, but the mercies of the wicked ones are cruel." (Prov 12:10)
