The concluding sentence of your question shows that you are also bitten by the same bug as the theists. You have arrogated to yourself the claim that you know more than the them.
This is precisely the weakness of the theists They have convinced themselves that they have the monopaly of truth. And like the monopalists everywhere they would not tolerate other claimants of a parallel domain.Since there is no room for logical arguments in matters of faith the believers have this easy r ecourse to depradating others I sometimes feel that in doing so they are perhaps convincing themselves that they are on the right path. The Geeth says that such ifnoramuses immersed in their own ignorance should be better left alone rather than sow seeds of suspicion in their minds(na janyed buddhibhedam adhanam karmasinginam). You also appear to be a institive atheist but have you every considerd the possibiity that the theists may also be looking at you pityingly for your lack of comprehension? So it cuts both ways. In historical India the kings used to summon religious conferences where the followiers of all faiths were respectfully invited. They were encourage to propound their respective views without fear or favour. The followers of other persuasions were also asked to put forth their view in the matter. The discussions sometimes led to adjustments among them leading to a better understanding of their respective positions. As religion held sway over day-to-day lives this exchange of views helped in reducing friction. With the increaing bend toward secularism such meetings are no more held but it would be a good idea to reconvene them where even atheists should be cordially invited. Whatever else it may or may not achieve it would at least reduce the friction of the type reported by you.
I am not a Christian and yet I hold a very high opinion about them. The Christians I met were mostly missioaries engaged in philanthropic activities. They were living religion . I do not agree with their world view but I have respect in my mind for them.

Because they are very, very bad examples of Christians. And they are not living as God wants. If they were, they would know how badly they're screwing up.
"If you are truly trying to be like Jesus then I suggest you try acting more like him. Jesus didn't come to condem the world but to save it." You're 100% right, and I get really, really upset at people who say they are Christians and then go out and act like complete morons and make Christianity look like a joke, and drive people away from it. They are doing very wrong, and they will get what they deserve, but I really hope they realise what they are doing and turn it around before they can do any more harm (both to others and to themselves!).
Please don't judge Christianty by these poor examples.

Atheists expect us to take abuse from all directions and throw our own scriptures in our face to persecute us at every turn. No matter what we do, they will find a reason to complain.
If we sit back and take the abusive language they spew, they only become more emboldened and more offensive because they can get away with it.
If we object then they say we aren't "acting like Jesus". Well, Jesus had a little tirade in the temple and threw all the unGodly money changers out for doing evil deeds. He DID condemn the moneychangers. Jesus did not tolerate evil and neither should we. Those who twist scripture to try to trip us up are not sincere and should be treated like the moneychangers. No, it is the atheists in this forum who are mean-spirited.

I am really tired of Christians being mean and hypocritical, of course nobody's perfect but so many of them go and they condemn so many people, and I'm a Christian but this behavior kind of helps me understand why people don't want to be Christians, and because of this I will say right now that there are probably so many athiests who are better people than a lot of Christians, myself included. At the beginning of an old dc Talk song, it said "The biggest single cause of Atheism in the world today is Christians. They acknowledge Jesus with their lips, and walk out the door, and go on with their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable". How sad...yet true.

Actually, it's because we are Atheists that we know more about other religions. It's also part of the reason why we refuse to call any particular reason our own - because we see too many inconsistancies with it.
And to be fair, I've seen some Atheists who have thrown verbal bombs in their time. I've done it before as well. So what I can say is, we're all humans. A little give-and-take and a little respect for each other's beliefs will get us a long way.

Some Christians get offended by atheist because a lot of them are cruel when they leave messages, that makes some Christians develop a tough skin against all atheist which isn't right same vice-versa as atheist. You left a message on one of my questions and you something about Christians hating you or something to that extent, but the Bible tells all Christians to love everyone not just Christians. I love you although I barely know you, and you don't have to like someone or the things they do to love them. Peace!

You have to remember, not all people who say they are christians really know Jesus. It doesn't matter how much you know about the bible, it is all about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is true that we should all try to act like Jesus, But all sin and fall short of the glory of God. It is good that your still believing friends do still accept you. You have to realize that the real Christians are the ones who accept you, but you cannot be so quick to condem others because of their shortcommings. Just as Jesus, you must forgive them for their shortcommings. Have a great day, and don't ever forget the awesome love of Jesus. He is standing there with his arms wide open, ready to accept you. All you have to do is accept his invitation. Jesus loves you!

Christians have lots of problems basically due to a religion based on paganism and idoltry that just doesn't work. Look at Mel Gibson. What a loser. Christianity is based on all the things God abhors; 1) idoltry, God forbid worshipping anything in the likeness of a man, 2) polythiesm, there is only one God, not three, 3) human sacarifice, God hates human sacrifice so much he stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac and Moses from sacrificing Gershom, 4) paganism, Every Christian holiday has pagan roots...Christians are argumentative and ignorant plain and simple.

Not to preach at you...
Christians, just like everyone else, are flawed. Some try to live well, some take their beliefs to mean they attack things or ideas they don't agree with or don't understand. If I were you I wouldn't change my belief system based on the behavior of other people, but would do what I truly believed to be true and right. You will find mean people in atheist circles, christian ones, Hindu, Buddhist, and in the grocery store, but you will find good people in all those places too.

Re. tolerance and understanding, it's not just atheists who have a wider view. The Buddhist teachings & practises are for unconditional love - but just like christians (and other persuasions), people are people - and we're all at different levels of understanding....
Some people need specific rules & quidelines in order to get a handle on spirituality, sadly they then go through a 'black & white' stage where everything & everyone is designated as 'good' or 'bad'. They eventually grow beyond it (one hopes!).
