my dad used cement pads and put gravel around the edges, his golden retrievers seem to like it, then they can run around the rest of the fenced backyard after they do their business.

Use grass or a plant ground cover, gravel will get hot and may hurt the dog's feet. Make sure you include shade for the dog such as a tree planted just outside the run area. Check any plants you use to make sure they are not toxic to the dog.

With my experiance, it is hard to clean poo off of gravel. I just recomend lawn or cement. Dogs like the cool cement or cool grass in summer and it's easy to clean off of. Gravel sticks and very soon you have no more gravel unless you plan on picking it off of the potty!

Wood chips and mulch will be easy enough to clean, but you do have to replace it with fresh once in awhile. Gravel is not good for thier feet and it will be hard to pick up the poop. Cement is easy to clean but you will have to clean it at least twice a day to maintain a healthy enviroment for your animal. I have wood chips in half of mine and nautural in the other half, with plenty of shade.

yes you can train them - we trained ours. if you walk the dogs on a leash to this area every time you take them out - then reward them with a treat when they do what you want them to do (pee &/or poop) they will continue to go in that one spot. depending on the age of your dogs etc this may take a while but it is worth it. also - we did this because we just bought our house about a year ago and the previous owners did tie the dogs up and there was a whole bare patch in the yard and a large line cut out of the grass where the dogs would pace back and forth - we just finally got some grass to grow there LOL good luck!

Look at a Doggie Doolie. It is a septic system for dog poop. I know you want ground cover, but if you are putting in a new yard it is a good idea.

Gravel would hurt their pads. Cement is best, but they must have a soft area of grass or mulch because the sun heats the cement and will burn your pups pads.

I think most run's have cement. It can be bleached. Gravel I think would be to course for the pads. I think most kennels/day care have cement.

BEST BEST use pea gravel! the dogs like it b/c its round and doesent hurt to walk on. it actually helps maintain strong feet and toes , legs and hips. also will keep worms and ground paracites away from dog. and helps stop most digging habits. def. PEA GRAVEL. COMES IN MANY SIZES. ALL WORK. MEDIUM SI BEST, I FIND.
