They are pretty much the same thing but Home Edition comes with more junky programs preinstalled but Pro does not have any or very little of those programs. I would recommend to not buy XP right now tho and stick with what you have for another couple months. Windows Vista- the newest from Windows will be released.

If your computer is only going to be for home use, XP Home is really all you need. If you are going to be in a corporate environment in which security is important and so is networking, you should conside XP Pro. Up front, for instance, one difference between XP Home and XP Pro is that XP Pro comes with the IIS webserver, which is much more advanced as well as more powerful features.

But for daily home use, Home is enough.

For a list of differences, see http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

If you're not in need of more than standard networking, then XP Home will be just fine. I'd wait for: Windows Vista to be rolled out in a few months.

Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to browse internet, Mail people, Chat with them, Store/play music, video, game etc... XP Home is the way to go.

But if you are into Programming and need to install Various Database, Web, application servers etc.. then you need XP Professional.

Don't go by what they give. Go by what you want. Bigger is not always better esp in software/OS.

Mac OSX is the best version :)
Seriously though, I would go for XP Pro and better yet, buy a new intel based Mac www.apple.com/imac or www.apple.com/ibook and use it to dual boot Windows and Mac!

Home is as it sounds, for Home users... alledgedly better for games and such
Pro is for business, alledgedly optimized for business applications.
