He just meant that he doesn't want people to worship other people besides him and Jesus.

Television can be a god, music can be a god, your boyfriend or girlfriend can be a god. Anything in your life that you give the most time and attention to is your God. And God is saying don't spend your time or love anything else more than me. He is the one true God and He is the only one worthy to be worshiped. The verse that comes to mind is Deuteronomy 6:5 "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength."

Oh, the first commandment is not hard to understand. It's hard for many people to apply to their own lives. It's easy in our day and age to distinguish a golden calf as an idol; it's harder for people to see their family, their employment, their success, or something personally important to them as a god (little g) too.
There's nothing wrong with any of those things, but when we let them take priority over God in our lives, we've set up an idol for ourselves to worship (i.e. give our primary loyalty to). Not for nothing does the New Testament book of 1 John with that warning: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen."

No, it's just that we only have God's word on that. Historically, many cultures have worshiped other gods than God. Therefore how can we trust God's word 100%? And if God was really the only god, why would he get so pissed off when his followers DID worship other gods? "Methinks the lady doth protest too much" and all that.

For some people money can be a god. For some statues can be a god. For some pride can be a god. Still for some possessions can be a god. This is what God was saying that none of these things should be placed ahead of Him.

No other gods before me is simple, Yahweh is the only God. All others are false. To worship a false deity is to commit idolatry.

YHVH is telling the Hebrews that He is their only God. The question I always have is how does that effect us who are not Hebrew? And why should I want to become Hebrew and worship only YHVH. What is he to me, he did not deliver me from Egypt. I actually like being Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Scottish, and American. No disrespect to YHVH and the Hebrews/Jews, but I am not them. YHVH is, therefore, not my God. Just kinda goes that way, huh?

It does insinuate that there are other gods.
You see, the concept of no other gods was very new to the people that made up the bible. They just screwed that one up a bit.

It is very clear, we are to worship the great I AM.
The Bible mentions false gods in many places. To worship gods other than the Triune God is called idolatry.

I think it is refering to pagan gods, in many religions back then there was a god for just about everything, love, war, peace, etc. (ie: Apollo, Venus, Isis, etc) So basically it was "choose your religion" Paganism or Christianity
