Great Britain only includes England, Scotland, and Wales...the United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and a few other places.

Basically, Great Britain is only the big island...while the UK is the country that includes everything.

The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, The Channel Isles and a load of other places. So the UK is everywhere that Her Majasty still 'rules', where as GB is just England, Scotland, and Wales.

They are not the same: The United Kingdom is a political union made up of four countries: England, Scotland, and Wales on the island of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a geopolitical term describing the combination of England, Scotland, and Wales.

The United Kingdom is a country that consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In fact, the official name of the country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."
Great Britain is the name of the island northwest of France and east of Ireland that consists of three somewhat autonomous regions: England, Wales and Scotland.

Therefore, England is part of Great Britain, which is part of the United Kingdom. The U.K. includes England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are not countries but the United Kingdom is. The remaining portion of the island of Ireland (that which is not the U.K.'s Northern Ireland) is an independent country called the Republic of Ireland (Eire).

Northern Ireland. That was simple. The complicated part is that there's no adjective refering to the UK (you can't have something that's "United Kingdomian"). So, many people (including The Guardian) simply use "British".
