First of all to everyone else, They are not illegal to own for private people in alot of states. There are still some states that require no licensing or permits at all.

You can find some great information that may help you out on this website... http://www.animallaw.info

As far as obtaining the actual permits and licensing it may be difficult depending on the laws in your area. You should do a search for exotic animal laws in your state as well as your city laws. Once you determine that you are indeed able to have a tiger you would probably obtain your license from the fish and game wildlife dept.

This article in particular lists some of the states with animal bans as well as the animals that are banned and some information on licensing on other states.(since I don't know where you are, I dont know if this will help you or not ).. http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ddusexoticpets.htm
Hopefully that will at least give you a starting point.

I was able to find this for you on a website about large cats. Tigers specifically.... With respect to the private possession of large cats in the U.S., 20 states (AK, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, IL, MA, MD, MI, NE, NH, NJ, NM, TN, UT, VT, VA, WY) prohibit them from being kept as “pets.
” Fourteen states (AZ, DE, IN, ME, MS, MT, NY, ND, OK, OR, PA, RI, SD, TX) require the possessor of a big cat to obtain a license or permit from the relevant state agency.
The remaining states (AL, AR, IA, ID, KS, KY, LA, MN, MO, NC, NV, OH, SC, WA, WV, WI) have no laws governing the keeping of large cats.

Good Luck!

Look up tiger rescue places. See what they go thru to raise & keep tigers and cost of food, vets etc. Could you really afford it?

Why DO you want a tiger? it's not a pet cat. You dont seem to know much about animals.

FYI: I'm part Native American also, so what's your point????

Other than legit Tiger Rescue places and zoos, I don't think tigers belong in captivity. They deserve their own environment. And actually I think it would be best if they weren't in zoos. They deserve their own habitats in nature - but people don't respect that.

Too many people get exotics for some type of ego gratification or to try to be unique. Unfortunately, the animal ends up suffering from lack of food, vet care, or is shot bc it got loose and hurt someone.

Maybe not illegal but irresponsible!!!!!!

There was a child in my hometown maimed by a tiger that some one owned at their house...if you feel you must own a tiger...let the smoke clear and think about it a minute...

The first link has a list of all the people that have been attacked by big cats kept as pets (some from zoos too).

Tigers are considered a dangerous animal. Individuals cannot own tigers, unless you own a zoo or animal habitat, for which you would need the appropriate license to do so.

You twit, this is illegal! A tiger is a WILD animal and should be left in the wild. You sound like a ninny. Leave wild animal where they belong, learn something about them, and then work for conservation. Geesh!
