What is the best way to let the church know that they shouldn't keep volunteering you for something just because you are retired .. I realize it saves them unnecessary expenses but one does get tired and burned out.

hello, i can totoally relate to you. i live in a small town of 700 people and my family goes to a small church where whatever they are doing you are EXPECTED to help with it all, you don't really have a say in it they just volunteer you for it. my mom has been on church session because she felt she needed to take her turn at it because if you don't people just wonder why you don't. well she recently resigned from it because she was getting so burnt out, see being on session you are chairman of a seperate committee, she was on Worship where she was in charge of any decorations, flowers, changing the colors -- anything like that. No one has ever resigned from session but my mom felt she had to do it to get the attention of some of the people, she just tells people that she resigned for personal reasons. It doesn't help matters one bit that our minister thinks that people don't have a life outside of church, she would sign you up and then call you to tell you what you are doing. We have been skipping a few sundays here and there to also get peoples attention that we don't want to be locked down to there crazy commitments. Just slowly ease yourself away, if your on a committee, resign and just back off of things for a while until people understand, now i don't know how big of church you go to but if it's a small one, i can totally understand. Hope this helps!

Simply tell them the truth. You love the church, but you are interested in pursuing other things. Tell them that they may call on your services, but for now you have to concentrate on other things. This way you gracefully bow out, but leave the door open for the future.

Have a chat with the leader of your congregation, and explain that you are feeling burnt out...it shouldn't be a big deal for them to lighten your load a bit.

best wishes

Remember the bible tells us "let your yes be yes, and your no be no". Certainly you can say, I'm sorry but I won't be able to (do this). It's okay to say no!

I would suggest that you need to tell them your feelings.
