I've noticed that my wife's cats aren't phased by their own reflection. Kittens sometimes attack their reflections. But you will never see a cat react to it's reflection in a way that indicates it is aware that the image it sees is itself.

Most of the advanced primates will see a spot of something on itself in the reflection and examine the spot on themselves, not the reflection. They know the spot is on them and not simply on the image they see.

When we first brought my kitty home, she would attack her reflection, but now she's like "oh, that's me, i'm the most beautiful cat on the earth" because she is.

The only animals so far that truly recognise a mirror image as themselves are: Common Chimpanzees, Bonobos, orangutans, dolphins, humans and possibly pigeons.

Wikipedia article above will give you any further information you might want about the "Mirror Test" in animals.

your cat knows that there is another cat there, but as the big scientists would say " he does not register the image as self"
your cat sees another cat. that's all. Cat's don't have a concious awareness.
