at a buffet brunch what is the customary tip since you are not taking orders or serving food, you are just taking care of drinks?

I've waited tables, but never at a buffet. However, I would give the waitress a tip of 10% (or better), even though most of your food will have been "self service".

The main reason for that being that the IRS assumes (unfairly) that a server is making a tip on each bill equal to 8% of the total bill, and taxes the server thus for the income they may or may not have received. Unfair but true! So, if you tip 8% or less, you are actually taking a buck or two out of the server's pocket.

Plus, tipping well is good karma! Waiters and waitresses work hard and YOU can be the guy to make their day by leaving them a good tip! : )

I would generally tip someone $1 - $2 if they were attentive and kept my drink full, I would tip more if they had to refill my drink a lot. Having been both a restaurant waitress, and and a cocktail waitress serving only drinks, I can tell you that serving drinks requires alot of running back and forth, so these people should be tipped as well.

Just as you would someone who brings everything to you, the goverment assumes that since they are wait staff then they recieve tips, which is not always true, but gives the resturant owner the escuse to pay them less then minimum wage. They do everything for you that a regular resturant does only there is no chance that thier finger or something else will be in your food when it hits the table.

you should tip what you thought the service worth. Did you enjoy your meal? Tip also goes to the chef - split - you know.

A standard tip is 20%...no matter who you are tipping.
