He is thinking shaved up the back and longer on top kind of like the old spiky haircut but now they use gel and stuff to make it look messy and curly on top but the bold bits now go a long way back on either side and the hair in the middle grows down to his forehead as normal

Shave it all except the very front part in the middle.
Let it grow long and when it is about a foot in length, slobber it with gel and form a question mark.
It might look a bit like a hook but only an idiot would think that.
Everyone else would see that he is wondering what he should do with his hair that day.

Go for the full shave i did and honestly i wouldn't have it any other way now and that's from someone who was at the hairdressers every week when i had hair , i started loosing mine about the same time as your hubby and i panicked a bit

Well what ever looks best on him, but shaved bald is popular this year, it also looks hot with some kind of facial hair to balance it out, the whole mushroom cut thing you described doesn't sound too good... especially with the receding hair line... it is pretty hard to loose hair...

Short all over, the shorter the hair the less you will notice the baldness. Do not try to get too stylish. It will just look like he is trying to hide being bald. My husband is bald on top and looks so much better when his hair is very short.

My hubby shaves his all off, he's not bald compleatly yet but if he lets it get too long he gets an 'island' its funny, also he has to keep his head shaved coz he has a tatoo on the back of his head which you cant see when he lets it grow.

I'm 40 started losing my hair in my late thirties
( marriage,kids,mortage )
Go down to Argos and buy a hair clipper and cut the lot off .
I save a fortune on hair care and I find women actually prefer it...
Also makes you look 10 years younger ...
