You're right! If the passport has expired or needs to be renewed, then you will not be permitted to leave the country. You need to apply for a fresh passport or have your existing one renewed. In both cases, the number will certainly change... And if you have a valid visa in your old passport, that will still hold good after the new passport is issued.

"Well it All depends, and let me tell you "Why" for example I had my passport when I was 12, which expired 10 years later, at the age of 22, and I renewed it with the same passport number, However when I got married in another state 7 years later they changed the passport number ALL together. Then I got divorced went back to my maiden name, and they Amended my name Only, but the number stayed the same, but who's to say, because within the next couple of years before I turn 40 my passport will need to be renewed again, so who's to say, your best bet is to go to the "Main Post Office" in the city you live in to find out for sure, because policy & procedures change, trust me I learned through my own experiences...

Your new passport will get the new number, the old one will be cancelled and can be easily checked by authorized personnel. You don't have to worry as airline would not require your passport number when purchase but you are required to present your valid passport (more than 6 months validity) when check in. As long as you carry legal passport, you won't have any problem.

No the number changes with the new passport. In the U.S., we are required to turn in our old passports prior to receiving our new ones. Depending on what country you are in, it should basically be the same. To book a flight your passport is not required, only when you check in for your flight and when you go through immigration. The immigration system will have your updated information. Just to be sure, contact your local passport agency.

Once you have renewed your passport, there should be no issue, if you have filled out forms with the old passport number and your new passport has a different number, you simply ask for new forms or just correct the current one.

You probably gave your number to the airline.
Call your passport office and ask them. If so, then call the airline a ssoon as you can so they can make arrangements.
