You can be Jewish and not believe in a god. Being a Jew is like being a Cherokee Indian, its more a race thing that a culture/ religion thing.

In Judaism, it's a pretty wide spread belief, that if you are born Jewish you will always be Jewish, even if you change your beliefs. Also, I've known some people that were born Jewish and now don't believe in G-d but still practice some of the Jewish traditions and celebrate Jewish holidays.

Judaism is not just a religion. It is also culture.
I have known some Jewish atheists. How they described it to me is that they have Jewish heritage and may observe some Jewish customs out of tradition rather than belief.

The person may be describing his ethnicity as much as his religion. Per Jewish tradition, "Jewishness" is inherited through the mother's line.
So, a Jew by birth and an athiest by choice.

Just because he's jewish doesn't mean he's religious. It's an ethnic thing. Hebrews are a race. He doesn't have to believe in god if he doesn't want to....doesn't make him any less hebrew. He was probably raised jewish. And he can't help that.

Judaism is both a culture and a religion. There are many cultural Jews who do not believe in God. They just can't get ellected to the Prime Minister's post in Israel, for the same reason it's impossible (right now) to elect an atheist to the US Presidency.

Maybe he's culturally Jewish -- still does all the holidays and such -- but doesn't really believe in God.
There are people like that in other faith traditions too.
