If you mean "Background Check" then it goes as far back as possible which means they will know everything that you did and were caught doing it.

The basic ones that we all have to fill out go back 10 years. And it is a pain in the ***! They need where you lived with no time gaps. And a person who knew you while you wre living there..a landlord or friend. Where you worked, with no time gaps. Three refrencess that are not family and who have known you for a good number of years. Everywhere you went to school. They need birth certificate (the real one) pass port (real one) if you're adopted or married all those certificates with raised seals. They need your family's information too. It took me hours to do. My oppion is, it's the military, if they really need it they should be able to find out all this info by their damn self on their own time. Or get the CIA or FBI guys who aren't busy to do it.
They do check all you're info. The FBI goes to your schools and calls the people on your papers if you are going for a high security clearance.

Depends on what the check is for - they go back farther for each increase in classification. So if all you need is a classified clearance they wouldn't go back as far as one that is more advanced.

My husband just had another security Clarence for his command here in Italy, and they went back ten years. It's kind of funny, because for that whole ten years they were looking at, he was in the Military, so had he done anything illegal they would have known about it anyway!

Depends on the level of security classification sought. Explore this a little and you will find that "Top Secret" classification is not the top.

all the way back to any records they can legally obtain. Usually included high school transcripts and may include unsealed court documents. The government can obtain sealed court records and transcripts back to grade 6.
