Hispanic students are at least 2 or more years behind not only in reading, but in school, in general. Even during the illegal immigration protest, they choose to skip school in order to march in order to "protect" their heritage and a lot of them are more fluent in Spanish than they are in English! A lot of them speak Spanish at home more than English...so...that is a factor in why they are falling behind.

Amerian students? Oprah really said that?
How well a child does in school often depends to a larger degree on their home environment than many people give credit for. If a student hears another language at home, exclusively, doesn't watch English-language TV, doesn't read English-language newspapers, magazines, or books, their reading and comprehension levels will lag.
It doesn't help that so many young people today are inundated with rap music, hip hop, etc. which doesn't use proper English. Yes, it's fun music, but it isn't good English and doesn't help young minds to improve their scope.

How are spanish speaking students suppose to keep up with english speaking students in english speaking classes. It would work if the parents had the funds to hire tutors and if families really cared enough about education but in todays society that is not priority in most spanish speaking homes.
Statistics show that the majority of primarily spanish speaking homes are middle to low class homes. I believ ethat many of these families would like their children to do better than they in the world and "just getting by" is good enough for them since their home country is probably 10 times worse than the conditions they live in here in America.
I say good for them...they're probably happy living their lives the way they are.

I think there is not enough parental involvement. There are so many parents who just don't care, they're too busy with what they want to worry. Mind you, I don't think that ALL parents are this way, but alot are. Also, in our country we have made money the one thing everybody wants the most and when a 16yr old thinks they can make money at a job, they don't see the cost of life in the long run. They don't think about insurance, retirement, sending kids to college, etc, etc. You don't realize you need all that till you get a little older and wiser.

Ignore Luzie m. Her response was completely inappropriate and unwarranted. People like her are the racists and are the ones birthing hate in our society. I hope she reads this.
