On the US airways website (thats the airline i'm flying with) it says that the weight limit is 50lbs and I can bring up to three bags without additional charge. Is that 50lbs per bag (i.e. 150lbs in total) or 50lbs in total between the three bags? HELP. I am flying on Wednesday!

Please do not tell me to phone the airline. I already tried! Your call will be held in a queue and will be answered at some point in the next millenium.

I am worried about the weigh limit because we are emigrating back to the UK after being in the US for 2 years...

3 bag, 62 inces, 50lbs, 55 inches, 50lbs, and 45inches, 50 lbs (so total 150lbs). linear inches is Height X Width X Length. The 62" bag must be checked, but the other two can be carried on or checked. In addition, you can take a personal item like a purse or backpack with you and this will not count as part of your baggage.

I am a travel agent, but here is the link to the baggage policy for US Airways.

Have a great trip :)

On domestic flights its two pieces of 50 lbs each. (I'm wondering how you got away with three!!! Must have been song...they're the only ones I know that allow 3). On international flights its two pieces of 70 lbs each. But if you have an international flight ticket, the domestic flight to the city where you're taking the international flight will also allow two pieces of 70 lbs. To be on the safe side just call and confirm from the customer service of the airline you're taking.

50 lbs is the weight limit for up to 3 bags in total, if you have more bags you pay excess even if under 50lbs.

It's per bag. So you get 150 lbs total, but honestly you shouldn't need it. And if so they do charge for it. I do know that some airlines will not allow anything over 100lbs (per bag) so you might want to pack with your suitcase on the scales.

Its interesting to read all the different answers. Phone up the airline and ask. I used to issue tickets in Europe and it is 20kg for economy class passengers and 30 for firs tclass on international flights. that is the total amount NOT per piece. After that you pay per kg for extra. You are allowed one piece of handbaggage and some magazines etc.

Checking bags is weight limit per bag. If you weigh them on your bathroom scales, leave a 5lb grace because most of the time the airport scales are calibrated and the home scales are generally off by a few lb. To lighten your load, pack toiletry items such has hair care..shampoo, conditioner, drier, irons, and make up in your carry on. This will also help if you bag is delayed or if you are connecting and the bag misconnects, you will have your shower supplies with you. Also make sure you take a change of clothes.

You may have interpreted the wording incorrectly, go back and re-read the website. You can check two pieces and carry one on, that is where you get the 3 pieces. Carry on bags are limited to 40lb and must be 22"x14"x9" or under.

US Air.com
For each ticketed customer, US Airways will transport a maximum of three bags free of charge:
Up to two (2) bags may be checked free of charge*
One (1) bag may be transported as carry-on
Total dimensions for carry-on bags may not exceed 51 inches (add length + width + height).
Total dimensions for checked bags may not exceed 80 inches (add length + width + height); however each bag greater than 62 inches will be subject to a fee of $80 USD / $100 CAD.
Bags greater than 80 inches may not be checked.

I worked for another airline and just keep in mind weight limits are enforced. Most will not even give you a 5lb grace, so keep that in mind as well and if you are close to 50lb at home, be prepared to be close or overweight at the airport and know the charges for over weight bags, its on their website as well.

****Especially traveling International, print a copy of your itinierary and write your contact information including your home address and phone number as well as contact addresses and phone numbers of your destination. Place them in a ziploc bag and inside your luggage on the top of everything. That way if your bag tags get accidently torn off or if your luggage gets sent to the wrong destination in error, they can contact you. Go get TSA locks, you can get them at Wal-Mart, but make sure they state they are TSA locks. When you drop off your bags, leave them locked. The TSA has keys for all TSA approved locks and should they need to enter your luggage, they can do so with out you leaving the locks unsecured. Just tell the agent when you drop your bags..they will ask if the bags are locked, just advise them that you have TSA locks.****

****The 70lb International weight limit has been changed to 50lb no matter the destination. Even if you are connecting to another airline that allows 70lb, you will be responsible for the over weight fee on the Domestic portion of your flight or the 1st airline. When you travel outside the US all other countries are on kilo's. To figure out your weight in kg, divide the weight in lb by 2.2046. That will tell you the weight in kg so that you will be with in guidelines in that country on your return. Dont bother calling, you will get put on hold for eternity and get a call center over in India and barely be able to understand what they are saying anyway. Most people end up more confused with them than anything. All your information is on the website. Just re-read it because you misinterpreted it****

Like I said, calling is a waste of your time. The answer I gave you is correct, you are allowed 2 bags each to check and they can not weigh more than 50lb each and one carry on each under 40lb. If you have a lot of belongings, look at shipping them as cargo through a customs broker or via Fed Ex or DHL.
