No, abortion is not legal throughout the pregnancy. That is the extreme right to life agenda who makes that claim in order to outrage people. Abortion is illegal after 12 weeks in most states unless the health of the mother is at risk or in the case of poor prenantal diagnosis. Some states do allow it beyond this point, but none beyond 24 weeks. This can vary though due the the fact that some states base gestation age on the size of the baby's head, the body size, or the actual gestation.

Thanks to the false information that has been provided by this agenda, some states have made it illegal to terminate a pregnancy even when the mothers life is at risk or the child is so severely abonormal that there is no chance of survival.

"Some states have enacted laws that ban abortion entirely. In addition, states and the federal government have enacted laws banning safe and medically appropriate abortion services as early as 12 weeks in pregnancy, with no exception to protect a woman’s health."

http://www.prochoiceactionnetwork-canada.org/abortioninfo/misconce.shtml

"Virtually all abortions are done in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and only a few after 16 weeks. Most late abortions are done for health reasons. Ironically, anti-choice harassment, laws, and defunding cause delays and lead to increased numbers of late abortions."

It varies from state to state. In Illinois, abortion is legal up to the end of the 3rd month, or 12 weeks. After that, when the pregnancy is no longer a zygote or embryo, and becomes a fetus, it would be considered murder. A fetus with a heartbeat, and brain can actually function outside of the mothers body. This is then a viable pregnancy. Most docters won't even perform 2nd or 3rd trimester abortions in Illinois.
But because of the kind of world we live in, the choice to abort or not to abort should be with the mother. She alone can make that decision, because she is the only one that knows if she were raped, or abused by her father, brother, uncle, mother's boyfriend, etc. It would be horrible for her to be forced to bear a child of that union. Abortions are not cheap. I believe the cheapest cost is around $150.00. Now, for a
young girl that lives in the ghetto, and has no money even for herself, where is she supposed to get that money? Desperation could lead to all sorts of criminal, risky activity. I can only imagine what sort of activity she would be into if she had to keep the baby. Where does she get diapers and milk? And some women feel that adoption isn't the option, because if they have to go through the 9 months of a pregnancy, struggling to stay alive, they might as well keep it and have the child struggling right with them. Abortion is not birth control, and it should never be considered as a quick fix to society's problems, but it is an option.
Every woman that gets an abortion is not an unwed, young, whore, that should just "keep her legs closed". If the woman didn't have a CHOICE in being in her situation, Why not give her the CHOICE then as to how she will correct it?

You should include the fact that when the sperm enters the egg it creates a real live person, people will say fetus but fetus is a person, it is alive, a human being.

Call 1 800 848 5683 it is a national pregnancy hot line, they can put you in touch with a pregnancy resource center near you. The resource center can probably answer all the questions you have and provide your material for your research paper. All their services are free and confindential (they do not provide abortions) but can tell you about the legality in your area.

Abortion in California is legal throughout the whole pregnancy though some abortion clinics won't do it past 6 months.
Usually late pregnancies will only be aborted if the mother is at risk, or if there is proof that the child will come out mentally and/or phyiscally handicapped.

Is Abortion Ever Necessary to Save the Life of the Mother?
http://www.all.org/article.php?id=10682

Dr. Alan Guttmacher, pro-abortionist and former head of Planned Parenthood, said in 1967: "Today it is possible for almost any patient to be brought through pregnancy alive, unless she suffers from a fatal illness such as cancer or leukemia, and if so, abortion would be unlikely to prolong, much less save life."
