You can't target fat-burning. What you CAN do is target muscle growth to better show through the fat that is there.

Do cardio exercises such as running or an elliptical. Try to do 30 minutes a day, no fewer than 3 times a week. As you get stronger and more fit add time and speed.

Also, adopt a weight-training program to build that muscle. Muscle demands more energy than fat, so as muscles get stronger they'll help to burn off even more fat. You're probably going for tone, so do many reps at a lighter weight. Do crunches and leg lifts to isolate the muscles of the abdomen. Many gyms have specialized abdominal machines - these are your friend.

Alter your diet if possible, cut out sodas (even diet sodas) and add more water and unsweetened fruit juices.

Agree with Fitology, hard area but not impossible. If you suffer from lordosis (forward curvature of the lumbar spine) then classes can help, you could also consider going to see a good physiotherapist who may be able to offer advice re degree of tilt of pelvis, stance and exercises/stretches you may be able to do at home to help. Most people have a certain degree of lordosis from various causes. Tight hip flexors can be a problem as well. To tone the region you'll need exercises that target the transverse abdominus, a large sheath of muscle that lays over that region. Try the following:- lie on your back, arms out to your side, then bring your knees up until hip and knee joints at 90 degrees, then concentrate on raising the bottom of your spine slowly of the floor and bring your knees over your tummy, its a very small movement and you should feel a crunch in the tummy area. repeat in sets as suits you. lie on your back, arms out to your side, then raise your legs into the air so your hips are at 90 degrees to your trunk, with your toes pointing up, then a bit like the previous exercise raise the spine slowly and concentrate on crunching the tummy, you're feet will swing slightly forward towards the head, repeat again in sets You'll need other exercises for the abdominal region to achieve balance, also some lower back work as well. Hope this is of some help. NB should have mentioned that lordosis can cause the lower tummy to bulge out.

I wish I knew from personal experience - but I have read that you need to do lots of lower abdominal exercises as well as eliminate excess sugars/carbs. My friend, who is a personal trainer, is able to get the bottom of her stomach really ripped but only when she is on a super restrictive diet.

When boredom, depression, as well as stress causes cravings, find a nonfood way to fulfill them such as taking a walk, calling a friend, going for a bath, reading a book, or maybe doing some yoga.
