Good quality food will help them smell good from the inside out. Cleaning their teeth regularly with a toothbrush and special cat toothpaste is the best way, but a lot of cats don't like that. You can buy special dental-foods (Science Diet Oral Care) which have bigger chunks that they *have* to chew and contain enzymes which help break up bad bacteria and tarter in their mouths (unless they're like my cat who swallows these whole). There are also dental treats which you can get at the vet--they're made with freeze-dried fish and lots of enzymes. These helped my cat, but they are quite expensive.
Otherwise, regular dental cleanings at the vet, same as you get for you.

We occasionally have to give our cat a form of antibiotics since she was born with an under-developed immune system and has some type of virus, a sidekick of which is smelly breath. If you take your cats to the vet they can tell you the cause of the odor and the best remedy.

your pets should not have bad breath... they probably need their teeth cleaned from a vet it is a very importaint part of their livelyhood. animals that dont have their teeth cleaned yrly stand a very good chance at getting a heart condition or loosing all their teeth.

you should have their teeth examined, there might be something going on in there and cats can't tell you that their mouth hurts. and they should have an anual check up anyway.
