The doggie is cute!
I have two bichons

hard to clean, the rust parts might just break off the grill...
It's time to get a new one!

The easiest way is to get a metal grill brush and use it while the grill is piping hot full of coal. The only way to get it sparkling 100% clean though would be to use oven cleaner like someone else suggested, but is it really necessary to get something 100% sparkling if you're just going to toss it back on an open fire? Try the brush first.

I bought this stuff called "Simple Green BBQ Grill/Microwave Cleaner". Use that along with a bbq grill scrubber (or even an SOS steel wool pad). The Simple Green BBQ Grill cleaner is absolutely awesome. Spray it, let it set a couple of minutes and the stuff practically slides off.

If you can't find that, you can use this new stuff called Easy-Off "Bam", all purpose cleaner. It's just in the regular cleaner aisle at your local store. That too makes stuff slide right off.

Depending on the metal coating, you may just want to get a new grill if it is rusted. Nothing like flaked off iron to give those burgers a nice crunchy texture! In any case, I guarantee it will be easier than dealing with removing rust.

The easiest thing to it is to put the rack in the grass at night before you go to bed and in the morning all of that stuff on there will be loosened by the morning dew, then you can just wipe it off with a paper towel.
If this doesn't remove the rust you can use vinegar to get that off.

I usually start a good hot fire and let that cook as much off as it can and then set in with a good wire brush. After it's cleaned you need to season it with oil and another smaller fire. Good luck

It will burn off the next time you light the BBQ, or yes its soapy water and elbow grease. You can buy a brush that will take off the burnt on food, it a short haired brush with tough hair, I take mine off and put them in the dishwasher, but i still take off the worse food with soapy water first.
