You ovulate once per cycle and the egg is only viable for 6-24 hours. You ovulate 14 days BEFORE the start of your next period--a lot of women here seem to think it is 14 days after your period but this is incorrect! Also, Nadira V says the number of days from ovulation to next period varies but this too is wrong--this is called your luteal phase and will not vary by more than a day each cycle--it's typcially 14 days.

Some women can actually ovulate more than once a month or release more than one egg at a time, but this is very rare. But this is how faternal twins would be conceived. And I believe it is 14 days before your next period starts, which means there's no exact way to know, unless you have your period within an exact number of days each month.
