6.35 mm caliber, small size, rocking safety switch on the left side of the gun, next to the trigger, only marks say MS, 6.35 mm. and made in Germany. Any clues about the manufacturer, year, and how to disassemble it for cleaning?

It sounds like an early Mauser pistol. The 6.35mm means that it is a .25 caliber. To convert from mm designations to US calibration multiply by four.

Does it have wrap-around wooden grips? Can you tell when it is ****** by the protrusion of a pin-head at the very back of the slide? Is the magazine release at the heel of the butt? Is it stamped with the German Eagle?

It sounds like an early Nineteen-hundreds Mauser, single-action (on the first shot) semi-automatic, .25acp caliber pistol. I used to own one that was manufactured around 1910.

Around the time of WWII the Mauser pistols changed dramatically in appearance and were made double-action on the first shot. They are very modern in appearance and rival the Walthers PPKs made famous by the early James Bond movies.

If you have an early Mauser as I described, it is easy to disassemble for cleaning.

Make sure it is unloaded. Remove the magazine. Again make sure there is no bullet in the chamber.

To clean you need to do no more than remove the barrel by pressing a 'spring' just below and behind the business end of the barrel with your thumb. The barrel should then swivel left or right. Gently pull the barrel away from the frame. It will come off in one piece. Run a patch with cleaning fluid through the barrel and repeat with a clean patch until clean. Wipe everything with a clean cloth.

Reassemble in reverse order.

For a 'deep' cleaning, take it to a competent gunsmith.

You have a 'neat,' interesting pistol, albeit a little 'low-powered.' It will still kill, so always excercise caution.

Before shooting it, have a good gunsmith give it the once over and always practice 'safe-gun-handling!' The meanest man in Laredo was killed with a tiny .25acp automatic pistol. One shot! I am only saying this so that readers will understand that even a tiny .25 caliber bullet can kill as dead as a .50 Caliber Action Express.

Sounds like the Mauser, but check http://www.rememuseum.org.uk/arms/pistols/armsap.htm. If you can ID the gun, you can probably find the instructions on the web.

What type of "gun"...handgun, I 'm assuming? Small, medium frame? Not enough info...

BTW...if you can come up with a copy of "Small Arms of the World", they're got a good selection of weapons along with assembly/operations instructions.

I would guess it's a Mauser.
