We can not pay the debt of perfect human life.
Christ's perfect human life was the equivalent of Adam's.
Once the matter has been entirely taken care of, being born sinful will become a thing of the past. Faithful mankind will be able to live eternally in a paradise. But, don't believe because I say so ... Believe because God says so! If you read the following --& the Scriptures too-- , I think you'll understand what I'm saying much better:

Dear Picard: You're right! That isn't justice:
". . .I became the symbol of your sin, and so I had to die instead of you. To the [human] ego sin means death, and so atonement is achieved through murder. Salvation is looked upon as a way by which the Son of God was killed instead of you. Yet, no one can die for anyone and death does not atone for sin."
The concept of one who will carry the burdens of other's sins is the Scapegoat. A concept as ancient as man himself. Isaiah gives the prophecy of the Sacrificial Lamb. And, as a human, Jesus is imbued through with the idea.
God did not sacrifice Jesus. It was seen by Jesus and the Holy Spirit that the prophecy of Isaiah - which the people knew well - could be turned into the greatest demonstration to mankind of Their Reality and Who They truly are that has ever been known. It would "expose" the Eternal Being we all are. The Kingdom. God's Children. The Resurrection taught nothing could kill Truth.
Because He never died, but rather, walked away there was no sacrifice. Only his death would have proved sacrifice.
One more thing: God does not forgive anything. He never "sees" anything in need of forgiveness. The Holy Spirit and Jesus forgive and teach forgiveness, because in our human state we have need of it and need of learning it. The Father is in the realm of Reality where forgiveness is never needed nor taught. You have two realms existing at the same time! The realm of physical life requires you to learn and practice what is never needed to be learned or known in the realm of Spirit - God and His Creation. Separate God from the Holy Spirit and Jesus. The Trinity is made up of three as" The Father/Creator and His Plan for His Children. He creates the Holy Spirit to be in charge of the Plan. The Holy Spirit puts out a call throughout the Sonship for a Child of God to take the role of Teacher and demonstrate their Reality to them. Jesus is the Brother who answers the Call. After Ascension, he is placed in charge of the Sonship, in partnership with the Holy Spirit. Their duties are divided as such: The Holy Spirit is your Comforter and Guide. Jesus is your Intercessor to the Holy Spirit, your Teacher and your Saviour. God is in charge of His Realm and His creations in their Reality. This is non-denominational teachings.

God said that when we sin the price is death. If he were to forgive us without punishing us, he would be telling us a lie. By doing that, he wouldn't be Holy. God had to keep his word, but he didn't want us to all die in our sins. The only way we could be forgiven is if we someone took the punishment for us. God did that with Jesus. To gain this gift God gave us, all we have to do is ask for it, and believe in him. I really hope this helps.

God sacrificed Jesus Christ, His son, (John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever should believe in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.") So that we ourselves would not have to be the sacrifice. You ask why we simply cannot be forgiven- but if you notice in life we all have choices and those choices lead to consequences- good or bad. The consequence of our actions (sins) is death (Rm 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.") and God gives us the opportunity to accept his love in the form of grace (giving us what we do not deserve- forgiveness and eternal life with him after our physical death). So God sent His Son to die so that you and I do not have to.
God Bless and I am praying that you will come to understand some of God's ways and his love.

HE's not only just but he displays grace in which we don't deserve what he gives, like His own sons life in place of our death for sins. He also shows unconditional love, wisdom, understanding, etc. People label Him as an Angry God but they forget that He is a loving God to. He's not out to get you, but if you do something wrong He's not going to leave it unpunished. Kind of like how you are disciplined by your mother and father when you are young. So read your Bible and mabey you can find a true depiction of what God really is life.

He can't just forgive us, He is holy and cannot be in the presence of sin, You are a sinner, therefore you could not be with him without the sacrifice that was made for you by Him.

Everyone has free will, especially Christ, if had not had enough compassion to die for our sins, he would have chosen not to. That's what makes his sacrifice so important. And God didn't kill him, free-will again, we made the decision to let that happen.
