People who are prejudiced against the mentally retarded have a mental problem themselves. They are either ignorant or have a case of arrested development, which puts them in a far worse category than those against whom they are prejudiced. It's like being biased against certain ethnic groups, people with physical handicaps, or anyone who is "different" from the mainstream.
In all fairness, though, I think people are more tolerant these days than in the past. Individuals with physical or mental handicaps have proven that they can lead productive and fulfilling lives despite their limitations. And anyone who makes fun of them or is prejudiced needs to grow up or have their head examined.

I guess fear and misunderstanding, I have a mentally challenged cousin and she's cool! , when I was in high school and the mentally challenged kids came out of their class the hall would spread like the red sea and run and laugh, and some of them would spit, kick or push you down when they got mad, but I always thought what if the person laughing got into a terrible accident, and they became mentally challenged how would they feel? How would their friends treat them?

People are prejudiced against anyone that is different...mentally retarded or not. There are many people that are walking around with low IQs and you can't tell until you try to have a conversation with them ...and realise that you are not being understood...so what is the point in talking any further.

Because they've never been in the company of mentally retarded people. Or in the case of my X. He had been grabbed and then chased down the hall in high school by a girl who..."wanted to kiss the boy". Incidentally that's why she was in the office in the first place. So when he met my cousin, who had down syndrome he was all nervous and stuck real close to me. She loved to give hugs to everyone, but amazingly she didn't want to hug him....lol.

Because people have a preconceived vision of the "perfect" body, hair, eyes, and when they see someone who isn't skinny, and perfect in their eyes, they start making fun of the person who isn't what they see as the perfect person. It's so sad. Some of the nicest people are overweight. I've met very gorgeous people that are so shallow, I couldn't stand being around them.

Because people truely don't understand. If they walked a day in the family of those who are affected by disability they would not make fun of those that are disabled. It makes me sick to see that there are video clips of people with disabilities being made fun of because they are so "comical." There is nothing comical about them... They need empathy, not laughter.

The same reason behind all prejudices..... fear and ignorance. They just need some education and a reality check.

It is out of fear. Most people fear what they don't understand and it makes them uncomfortable. I wish we could all be in someone Else's shoes for once, then they would see that we are all the same underneath.
