He has earned and deserves nothing extra than what he already has. He has earned the 4.5 GPA and will reap the benefits from it when applying to colleges. If he is truly as generous with his volunteer time, he would see that the money would be better used helping others.

If your parents have 100,000.00 to spend then it is up to them to decide on whether to buy you a car or not. Even if you feel you have earned it then be responsible and get a paying job and then ask them to help you get one. Don't expect them to just go out and use money that they may feel they have earned for retirement or there later years in life, or even your college education. You need to first ask them what their plans are for the money. Don't think that because you got good grades in school means they have to reward you for it. You only did what you was suppose to do as far as getting Good grades go and being a volunteer at a homeless shelter should be something you did from the heart because you care about those less fortunate then you. Truthfully getting a job and asking them to help you out is the right thing to do. If they are loving parents like I think they are then they would be even more proud of you for wanting to assume some of the responsibility for something that high in value. Good luck to you.

Haha. Well I would go with something RIGHT AROUND 30,000. Just because you live in an upscale neighborhood why does you kid need a fancy car? You have to figure that most kids will WRECK if not total their first car. No 16 year old needs to be trying to impress people with a car.....as a parent I would go with something REASONABLE and SAFE. Honda Accords, Jettas, if you have to go with something more expensive the newer BMW's are very safe and around 50k.
P.S.
Don't get him a f*cking SUV...he has no use for it and its a waste of gas and pollutes our environment.
One more thing:
To the people that keep saying GPA's only go up to 4.0.......SOME SCHOOLS HAVE GPA's GO UP TO 5.0......jeeze

You should ask him that.
If it's a surprise maybe you should just hint around it, like by talking about the next car you want to buy for yourself, or what you would've loved when you were his age or just pointing out cool cars that maybe you should get like you're going through some middle age crisis or something and you wanna be young and hip again.
update- At the last graduation I went to there were plenty of kids with higher than 4.0 GPA's, though never as high as 4.5, more like 4.2
I also used to think it only went up to 4.0 but now I know.

So volunteering earned him a car? Then how is it volunteering? Getting good grades -- somehow earns a +$30,000 car for a kid? *sigh* Not the lessons I'd wish for our kids to be learning.
Something truly earned is best respected. Getting the +$30,000 car is for your sake so you can "keep up appearances" -- yes? So - if it's really for him -- get him a small, safe, environmentally-safe car that he at least earns some money toward - or toward it's upkeep and insurance. Be his parent - not his friend.

That depends on the kid. He sounds like a good kid, but his personality should help decide the car. Is he a sporty kid that likes to kayak, ski, snowboard? Probably a safe SUV that gets good gas mileage. Is he a showy kind of kid? A Honda would be a good start. An environmentally conscious kid would most likely enjoy a prius.

get him a 06 or 07 mercedes s-class, but I have to warn you that there is a big chance that he will crash it and you won't be happy. also if he is like most teens he will drive the car as fast as it can go which I think on these is like 160 or higher, so also save some money for the tickets.

Sorry kiddo, a 4 door sedan. When I bought my son his first car, the insurance agent told me that it is the best thing to get for a new driver. No matter how mature or good they are, they need experience (trucks and SUVs roll too easily) and sports cars affect hormones.
