I had a coupon that said that you get a free sandwich if you purchase one. They told me that they don't consider a hamburger a sandwich and I couldn't use the coupon. Who is right?

Technically you are right. But in their restaurant, they would be allowed to define the items on their "sandwich menu". Of course, you could bet that a call to them discussing their misleading advertising and your proposal to disclose it in a letter to the Editor might remedy the confusion.

Yes, a hamburger is typically a sandwich - although a particular kind of sandwich.

A sandwich is a food item typically consisting of two pieces of bread between which are laid one or more layers of meat, vegetable, cheese or other fillings, together with optional or traditionally provided condiments, sauces, and other accompaniments.

The term "sandwich" has been expanded—especially in the United States—to include items made with other types of bread, such as rolls and focaccia. Thus hamburgers and "subs", for example, are called "sandwiches" on the East Coast of the United States, but not in the Midwest, South or western states, or in most other English-speaking countries (since such "sandwiches" are not made with slices of bread from a loaf).

I would consider a hamburger a sandwich. Isn't a sandwich two pieces of bread with something in the middle and isn't a hamburger meat inside two pieces of bread? That's dumb they didn't take the coupon

A hamburger is made with a patty of ground beef. A sandwich is made with turkey, chicken, roast beef, etc. It's very simple. Good try though with your coupon.

No. Hamburgers are hot foods. Sandwiches are cold foods. Sorry, the restaurant is right.

Go to the Better Business Bureau and register your complaint. Do not quibble over how to define food that is for your stomach instead of your brain. At www-dot-louislunch-dot-com you will see where the first such sandwich started and it was On Toasted White Bread (square) and nothing but onion/tomato/cheese and no round bread. Go to the BBB and put your complaint on their record - at least you will feel better about it.

Yes! On the McDonald's menu, all the burgers are listed under the "Sandwiches" heading. And at Burger King all the different kinds of BK Whoppers are listed under "Whopper Sandwiches". You can't argue with that!

Unless it designated "Cold" (or something similar), a hamburger is definitely a sandwich -- Bread, Meat, Condiments, Vegis
