It may be that your friend has a compression of the 5th vertebrae but an MRI scan is needed in the first instance to find the cause of his pain and discomfort. If you are in a position to pay for private consultation and treatment you should have no problem finding a suitable UK hospital on the Internet. However, the NHS has surgeons and consultants with the expertise in the field of Orthopaedics. Though as you know you will have to play the waiting game. Not unless a consultant considers that your friend's condition to be in urgent need of attention and is detrimental to his health and well being he will be put on an NHS waiting list.

Most chiros will not even being to offer treatment until they see proof of the damage or condition until they see results from MRI scans or xrays. I know I went a chiro who advised me to go and see my own GP for hospital referral and scans. So I wasted precious moments. Chiros are very good and offer sound advice, but sometimes even they are unable to offer the correct treatment.

I empathise with your friend having suffered this most painful of conditions myself which after surgery left me with no reflex in my right leg, but that was a small price to pay for me be able to get my life back after successful surgery.

Some back pain is horrendous and can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress to the sufferer and carer. So I wish your friend speedy relief from his the pain and suffering. And good luck to you with finding the a hospital that is right for your friend.

It must be wonderful to have a friend such as you.

Good luck and good health to you both of course.

Has your friend seen a chiro? i can not tell you how many times i have heard of peoples docs telling them they need surgery when all they really needed was a very good adjustment. You ought to have some chiros there. I went to Chiro school with quit a few from the uk.

I assume the vet tested her blood and urine for possible reasons as to why her back end may be hurting?? Did he do an X-Ray? If your vet did neither, he is medicating your dog just as blindly as you would be if you gave her the Rimadyl yourself. Rimadyl can be helpful but remember 2 things: first of all, it is just an NSAID......the dog equivalent to Tylenol. Rimadyl has minimal effects on most things it is prescribed for. Secondly, it is very hard on the kidneys. I dont like the drug because it's effects (if any) are too temporary and the damage it can cause is too permanent. Doctors overprescribe it, and I believe they do this mainly to pacify the dog's owner. Your vet needs to find the cause of the pain and stop screwing around with "bandaid" fixes like Rimadyl

1st .... start with a MRI to assess what exactly is wrong before any backyard surgery happens.
