Some Christians get the wrong idea when I say my favorite group is Aerosmith. Is it wrong that I'm Christian and think Aerosmith is great and I love their music? I know they have some not-so-good songs and I stay away from those. I personally think songs like "Dream on" and "Crazy" are perfectly fine--but maybe I'm wrong. Am I?

So it's not a sin to listen to their songs? (I mean, as long as I have good judgement when it comes to "okay" and "not okay") What about their concerts? They're coming in concert here soon and I want to go--is that a sin?

Paul said it best. "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are good for me". Who can say what that is for someone else, unless of course the Bible is specific about it.
So I think that leaves that kind of choice up to you and God.

I am an evangelical Christian, and most of my favorite bands are secular. I think that there is a time and a place for everything. Worship bands and christian singers are needed to glorify God, but music is much more than a way to praise. It is an art form. Just like saying that a Christian cant read any book, unless it is written by a Christian, the thought is ludicrous. If some people want to be self-righteous, let em. They are the ones Judging you. They will face God on judgment day. So no, I like aerosmith too.

It's the Garbage in/Garbage out concept ( not to suggest Aerosmith is Garbage from a musical stand point)
If listening to that music doesn't cause you to act or think inappropriately then it's not a problem for you, but just be careful about who you do listen to it around, some people it is problem for. If nothing else for some it's a reminder of a past life and they associate it with things they did ( and shouldn't have) before they became a Christian.

Alright, I'm not a Christian, but hopefully this will help anyway:
It's okay to listen to Aerosmith for the same reason that it is okay to read Plato. A mature Christian should be able to appreciate the skill and artistic talent associated with non-christian works without necessarily subscribing to the behaviors such work advocates.

Lots of secular music is okay. There is nothing wrong with a song just because it is not church music. I like the Eagles. Some songs to offer us an opportunity to lust or tempt us in a wrong direction. Unfortunately some Christians would rather remove all music just to be safe-that what I call legalism. And its wrong. Just always be on guard.

Of course its not a sin to like music other than Christian music. I personally am a big fan of Pink Floyd as well as Third Day. There is a lot of secular music I like. I however dont like music that puts God down but I dont like conversation that puts God down either. All songs are conversations with music (songs with lyrics that is) and if we dont have to be talking about how great God is 24/7/365 then we dont always have to sing about it either.

Oh my god! Listen to whatever you like, how is it wrong to enjoy any type of music?
Even if the lyrics are about the most depraved things does that mean you somehow advocate it or even will put it into practice? Of course not... If you do you already had problems before you started listening to the music.
If you like the way something sounds, listen to it, if you don't, then don't. You don't need to create anxiety for yourself over something as simple as your music preference.

Sweetest,
With your question - I can surly answer. I have been a Christian for 31 years - grew up in the 70's loving rock-n-roll. Yes it is OK to listen to rock-n-roll, it's the drugs and sleeping around that rock-n-roll sometimes portrays as being "good" that can lead people astray - read and study your Bible - enjoy the Rock-n-roll, just don't let the Rock-n-roll rule your life.
I got to meet my Rock star in June - it was great!!

don't you get tired of others judging and repressing you constantly? what do you feel you'll be missing by not being around people like that. consider having new friends who are more tolerant, and open minded. not only will you be less hassled, but you'll also learn alot more from open minded people. usually, repressive types are full of fear, that's why they want to block out the "unsafe" from their lives. but, is that really a life? anyway, thinking for onesself is the best approach. be brave. good luck
