I heard that when a Korean woman marries a North American guy, she usually takes control of the marriage, and becomes boss. Is this true? I thought Asian women were usually subservient.

That's a lot of assumptions there. Asian women are not usually subservient. Don't know where you've been, but obviously not in Asia.

It all depends on the guy (what "North American" ethnicity? wimpy white guy? African-American? etc). It also depends on whether the woman has been raised in the U.S. or in Korea, or wherever. Korean women, as a whole, are raised to be strong, the subservient image probably comes from politeness, not subservience.

Sorry for the sarcasm, it just rubbed me the wrong way, I guess.

Yes, and no...Korean women are not at all domineering-until you get married.

See, Korea is still quite a strongly traditional society, and it is expected that men are the dominant figure (outside the home) in larger society: He is the boss and she defers to him.

However, the women has dominion over the house- this means she does all the cooking and cleaning, paying the bills, etc. But it also means all domestic decisions are made by her. It is still very common for the husband to turn over his paycheck every week to his wife, and she allots him his monthly allowance. (In the Confucian past, handling money was considered beneath the man, and paying bills was the domain of the woman.)

Thus, while they are dating, Korean women are generally very passive, she will allow him to decide the movie, decide the restaurant, etc, without objections. But when she gets her home, she expects the same from him. And Korean men don't spend much time at home, anyways.

(This can all be quite disorientating for the western guy.)

MAny of my Korean students tell me so... But that would depend on which class they belong.. If they a little rich, they're born to be domineering...

But in most cases, it's the men who lead and that men in Korea are more favored than women.. Women just say yes and yes .. Submissive ones....

Not from what I have observed while I was in South Korea. But I'm sure it is just an individual thing.
