sunni and shiettes are agreed upon the basics of islam. e.g.
There are six beliefs in Islam.
Believe in oneness of God
Believe in His angels,
Believe in prophets of God,
Believes in books (i.e. the revelations of God almighty),
Believe in the day of resurrection,
Believe in divine destiny i.e. Qadar
There are five pillars of islam
1. Testimony of faith i.e. There is no god worthy of being worshipped except Allah, and Mohammad is His Messenger.
Prayers i.e. Salaah
Charity i.e. Zakaah
Fasting in the whole month of Ramadan i.e. Saum
Pilgrimage i.e. Hajj
they both agrees with this.they both say that Muhammad (s) is the last and final prophet.
but the difference is slight one.
i.e. shittes believe that after Muhammad (s) there are some imams, i.e. leaders which are divinely inspired for the guidance of muslims. but sunni rejects this concept.
-------------
there are around 10 % of muslims, which are shites.
hope this answers

Suni are the majority and follow the original teaches as practised by Mohammad PBUH and his companions. Sheite are the minority and formed after the death of Ali the fourth Leader after Mohammad PBUH, and they have many changes against the original teachings.

It starts with who should have become the leader after Muhammed died. One guy was picked and the Sunnis are ok with that. The Shias think some other guy - Fatima's husband - or Muhammed's son-in-law should have been picked and was wronged by not being picked. But, I am sure it doesn't end there.

The Sunnites are the traditionalists. One of their conception is that the successors of Mohammed(SM) must be of his clan Quraish.
The Shites are the legitimists. One of their conception is that the successors of Mohammed(SM) must be of his family-that is the descendants of Ali. There are other differences.
