His ex broke his heart about a year ago. Does he have feelings for me or is he just palin old confused?

What's to understand?
He sounds confused. NOT YOUR PROBLEM. Life would be simple if we actually LISTENED to what men said and WATCHED what men actually do. This man has promised you a big fat ZERO. In return for what, may I ask? Oh yes - only you upping sticks and moving your whole life for him!
He's alread laid the groundwork while he's at it for his escape route - his broken heart - if things don't work out after you move.
I'm not dissing you - really - I've been there and made some stupid stupid mistakes all for "lurve".
Believe me - your life's too short and too precious to waste on a guy who doesn't know what the heck he wants - however nice he may seem.
The question you should be asking is "What do I want for MY life?" Please make sure you are pursuing YOUR goals and not worrying about what some guy may or may not want. This is when you will meet the right guy and you won't need to keep second-guessing his thoughts like this.
This guy could be using you as his unpaid "therapist". Many guys do that after a break-up. I guess girls are easier to talk to about mushy stuff. Their guy-friends just tell them to get over it. Trouble is, when they DO get over it (the ex I mean) they'll end up going out with someone else altogether. The "therapist" transition girlfriend reminds them of bad memories and they want the fun girl who knows where she's going in life.

Men love things that are convenient. Remote controls, microwaves, free beer, etc.... the same logic applies to women. He may not want a romantic relationship with you, but it's a lot easier to get into your pants if you're in the same city.

He wants to know, what kind of hold he has on you.. He is afraid of getting his heart broken again. He needs to know. What he means to you.
