I had a kitty that used to attack intruders. So, sure they can.

Cats can attack a burglar.
In all honesty, the main deterrent a dog has is it's barking. Most nobody will notice, or look into a snarling cat noise, unless it's truely disturbing, but a barking dog gets everyone out yelling "SHUT UP!" Burglars don't like neighbors to see them.
Sometimes, dogs will attack a stranger, but in general, no homeowner would allow a dog to jump at you, and you're pretty big and scary to many dogs.
Cats of course, cannot jump on your legs and push you over to maul you in the face like a great dane or a doberman, and they rarely bite. However, some cats have a tendency to hop up on furniture, and then leap on people's heads, "playing" with the person's head just like they would play with a bird or a mouse.
Siamese cats are the most likely to attack like this, after having been bred for the purpose for thousands of years by Egyptian priests as a way to guard the tombs. They sometimes do this to the owners of the house when they forget to turn on the light at night before going about, and from atop your head, with four sets of claws and teeth, a cat can be a formidable threat to your future ability to see and go about in public without drawing unwanted attention... Generally, it is no threat to your life, like a pitbull would be, but it'll probably wake up the neighborhood, and cut any burglary attempt short.
Obviously, if you want to protect your home in this way, lots of shelfing and furniture near the roof is the way to go. Turning on the lights, and not punishing your pets for shredding the upholstery may also be necessary... and there is no cat obedience school to keep the critters from getting the wrong person, or ignoring the real burglars.
Every home defense scheme comes with trade offs of course.

No, most of the time a dog just has to bark to put an intruder off.
Never heard of anyone run screaming into the night 'cos a cat meowed at them!

Yes, it is possible, though it is very rare.
It takes a male cat for this as female cats don't have a territorial instict like males (that's why males "spray").
Our cat Smokey was a male of 19lbs of muscle, 30 inches long(without tail) and an agressive player and defender of his territory.
The Gas & Electric company almost sued my parents when Smokey jumped on a meter reader and took his helmet off.
Smokey also would knock us over to get out the door (he was an inside cat) to attack any stray dog or other animal near our house.
Smokey tore the heck out of a poor German Sheperd one day. The dog lost part of an ear and sight in his left eye.
We always treated Smokey with tenderness and care. He was just one heck of an aggressive male, but he never hurt family or friends.

Maybe. But an intruder would probably be more threatened by a dog - they're usually bigger and thus have bigger teeth. Dog bites can do some damage...I'm not sure the same is true for cat bites.

Yes. I had a cat that when we open the door to someone she didn't know she would assume the attack position. She wouldn't attack unless the person started to confront her but I believe if a burglar got in and saw her like that, it wouldn't be a good sight.
But cats can protect you from the animal world that sometimes annoys you: spiders, flies, wasps and cockroaches and the natural world: it has been said they can feel earthquakes, tornadoes and thunderstorms first than human.

Yes cats can do the same. They wont do it like dogs will and they might not be as good as dogs, but they can attack.

Cats beleive in Karma, they generally don't give a crap if someone is breaking into your house, so long as they leave the cat food and empty the litter tray on the way out.

Knowing my cat, the only way an intruder would leave is if they were allergic to her! LOL She loves everybody.

My cat does! If anyone comes over she will growl , hiss & actually attack....which is why I had to have all 4 of her feet de-clawed :( in a nut shell, she got my neighbor(when he broke into my house) a few years back....
