english people use stones to measure weight. pounds are money. just because you're not educated enough to understand this, it does not mean other people are idiots or morons. don't judge others based upon your own lack of intellect. i think you need to expand your horizons or keep your negative comments to yourself.

It was originally a British unit of measure. A stone is equivalent to 14 pounds. It was a real surprise to hop on a scale in a New Zealand hotel and find it had two read-outs, Stones and Kilos! However, it's a quick way to learn about weights and measures..... (yes, there was a weight gain. New Zealand has the best ice cream in the world, and the least expensive, so you gorge on this absolutely great stuff because you know there won't be anything like it when you get home again.)

"Stones" is a semi-archaic European measurement, used especially in Britain.

Try to be a little more understanding of alternate methods of measurements, especially considering that "pounds" is a completely arbitrary, outdated method as well. The scientific community of the world uses Grams, you might want to think about using it as well.

Edit: I think what I, and everyone else who found your tone offensive was getting at is not that it is possible to bigoted against a unit of measurement. However, when you make obviously disparaging remarks about people's intelligence based solely upon which unit of measurement they are using. What I was getting at with my "arbitrary" comment was that really, majority does not denote correctness, especially when both options are arbitrary. I only really have a good grasp of height in kilograms, but I wouldn't call someone an idiot for using another means od measurement. Or, for a better example, despite all efforts to switch my thinking to the metric system, I have a hard time conceptualizing heights that are given to me in meters. However, if someone were to tell me that they are 1.7 meters tall, I wouldn't get mad that they are using a different system than I am, just like I wouldn't mind if they were using hands.

So, to summarize, I don't really care at all which system of measurement you use, but your question was confrontational. No-one likes to have their intelligence insulted, (that much is clear from your rebuttal) especially over such a trivial issue as terms of measurement.

People use the stone as a unit of measurement because that is what they are accustomed to using. Learning to use a different system is a lot like, for example, getting used to the twenty-four hour clock, or adopting a different system of slang. Even if you understand the unit of measurement on an intellectual scale, it can be really difficult to conceptualize it. I might know how big a centimeter is, but it doesn't help me to picture how tall a person who is 167 cm tall is. On the other hand, I can easily visualize someone who is 5" 11".

The stone is a unit of mass. It is part of the Imperial system of weights and measures used in the United Kingdom, and formerly used in Ireland and most Commonwealth countries. It is equal to 14 pounds avoirdupois, or 6.35029318 kilograms. Though no longer an official unit of measure, the stone remains almost universal for use in Britain and Ireland as a means of expressing human body weight.

we made strones. theres 14 pound to a stone, and 20 stones to the hundredweight (CWT) and 20 hundredweight to the ton. thats an imperial ton, and not a metric tonne, which is of course a 1000 kilos.

and you call me idiot, i can do math in my head, we used to have a base of 12 with our money, we only changed so you wanks, er yanks could get a grip.

what about fractions, or in the dumb **** usa dont you have them, multiply 22/7 x 29/32... ill bet you dont even know how do deal with a top heavy fraction. and you have the temerity and the audacity to question our mathematical abilities..remember, we were colonising the world and you lot were murdering the indigenous population. we had underground railways and viaducts, steam ships and major road systems, you were shooting anything that moved, riding horses on dust roads.... by 1930 we were sending radio signals across the world. (marconi worked for the MOD and the BBC)

you are teh dumb ones. you cant create technology, just like china and the koreans, yuo steal it and call it yours. we built the first computers, babbage in the 1700's and Alan Turin did the big breakthru machine which broke the german military cypher. (read spycatcher)

your all brainwashed sheep. america is best..why? because your advertising tells you it is. world opinion of you sucks. arrogant ignorant and forever throwing their weight around. and hten you get a slap, like the towers, or McVey in oaklahoma and you over react. but now you know how it feels to be under attack from within, and you silly silly people suported the IRA, noraid and the st patricks day parade.

then you sell weapons to (the sandinistas), youve meddled in world affairs, and each and every time youve been beaten. and of course the latest irony is you sold the guns which kill americans every day to the middle east, to the taliban and ossama, oh ill bet youre really glad you have the right to bear arms...and die on a battlefield fighting for oil. all youve got to look forwards to is the front line. somewhere theres a real moron. he cant count, he cant speak english, he prays to a different god and has a ideology which youll never understand, oh and hes got an AK, and all he wants to do is blow a hole in your stupid bigoted unprotected head... my money is on johnny raghead.

you only have to look at the dead to realise its true, we the brits have so far lost a couple of hundred soldiers, how many thousand americans have died so far? and you could be one of them. yesssiree jim bob... lock n load... you dont even have the required intelligence to realise your president is a lying cheating fraudster, and youre all going to die in a war as cannon fodder. and its morons like you which perpetrate the myth that america is great... it isnt. the american economy needs the world far more than the world needs american products, or indeed americans. and if you ever get your head out of the walled garden, you may understand why.

You have no business calling 'us' morons and idiots when YOU are incapable of understanding stones! You say that you took basic chemistry, but if that's as far as your education took you then it's no surprise that you don't have the BRAINS to work things out, never mind investigate where it came from yourself..!

Are you capable of using feet and yards as well as inches? If not, WHY NOT? If yes, why the heck are you complaining about stones????!

Do you understand the logic behind Celsius, or do you hide behind the warped Fahrenheit because it gives bigger numbers...???

The "stone" as a unit of measure is from England.

Hey Fivetoze,
I am not defending the original question, most people from the US are not of this mindset. If you want to talk in sweeping generalities about the US I have a question for you. Who saved your collective bums in WW2? Who would save you again if your country came under attack again? Not France!
