Is it strange that the only thing he says in ahhh, ahhh? He won't say mama, dada, yes, no....he won't say anything. He just reaches for stuff or points and makes noises. When you ask him to tell you what he wants he just points more, and if you keep asking him to tell you what he wants he just gets mad and gives up. My sister and her husband just make matters worse by just giving him whatever he wants, they don't ever try to make him talk. Should he be talking by now or is this normal?

Some children do not talk until they are at least three. If the family doctor has check him out and find not medical reasons like hearing loss, then maybe you need to just relax and let the parents be in charge.

Do encourage talking and communication. Pointing is a form of communication, called cause and effect relationships. Did you know that a child as young as a year can learn sign language? You can get a book at the library or find the basic signs on internet.

Sounds like your repeating things to encourage his "talking" is frustrating for him. Back off and have fun with him.

If when he reaches three and not talking, have your sister/hubby take him to local education center for testing. Language delays can be normal but when a child reaches the age of three under Federal law, the school system can test and provide FREE services to encourage language development! But it has to be the parents who ask the school system for help!

My son will be 3 in two months, and he hardly speaks a couple words. I constantly tell him to use his words to tell mommy what he wants, but he also just points, or takes your hand and brings you over to what he wants. We are looking into getting him into speech classes to possibly help with the delay. I would have to say it's not normal, but that doesn't mean you should worry. I also think part of my sons delay is due to the fact that he has an 8 year old brother to talk for him, and therfore, just relies on that. I wouldn't be too concerned if i was you, as long as the pediatrician has checked your nephew for any possible hearing problems.

He should be using three word sentences by now. Talk to the pediatrician about a referral to an Early Intervention Program. It may be something that needs only a few speech therapies, or might be a red flag for delays in other areas or for conditions such as autism.

There is no real time fram as to when kids will hit milestones. Some don't walk till well past a year some walk in the seventh month. This holds true for talkig potty training and all other "milestones" so don't sweat it.

He may have a mild form of autism called asperger's syndrome. I would tell your family to get him checked our immediately. We discovered the same thing with our son. We caught it early enough that now he is a normal child and functions on the age level he should be.

he should be talking. with no motivation to talk, ie. your sister giving him whatever he points toward, doesn't help. he could also have a mild form of autism. does the local school system offer any kind of program like a state funded first steps program? My kids needed it. They both began speaking clearly when they were 4 after at least 1 year of help from our local school district.
He should be talking, but with no motivation to talk, I wouldn't either.

I don't think that is normal. But give him more time. However, they should let him be around alot of kids around his age or older.Kids tend to learn more or be more motivated to do things when they are around other children. My cousin just turned 1 and he says ma, no, shut up, you bad, and his sister name.Another little one is 1 and 9 months and she says ma, dad, cup,no,hi and other little things. They develop at different rates because my little cousin is 1 and 1 month and she doesnt do hardly anything-just started walking.

It's not unusual for boys to be delayed in speaking.

Your sister and husband are certainly not helping matters by not encouraging him to speak, but there's not much you can do about that, since you don't live in your nephew's house.

If the parents are concerned, they can have him seen by speialists.
