Break the top into bitesize pieces...whether you eat the stem is up to you but you might want to peel it and cut it up into 1 inch chunks. Steam it over boiling water until it's tender, which should take about 5 min depending on how much you've got. Test it with a fork after a few minutes. Top with lemon juice and olive oil, or salt, or cheese sauce or whatever you like best.

Two things.
One is that vegetables taste better when they are not overcooked.
Two is that there are more nutrients in them cooked that way
So here's what you do.
Drop the broccoli florets into boiling salted water and allow them to cook for about ten minutes so they are still crunchy. This is called al dente cooking (ie can be felt by the teeth) and I prefer many vegetables to be cooked this way including carrots, peas and cauliflower
Alternatively steam the florets until the same consistency is achieved. The broccoli should be bright green, firm and not limp.

Microwaving absolutely. But don't invest in a microwave steamer - not needed.
I just put a small amount of water in the bottom of a bowl and put broccoli in. Cover loosely with either a lid for the bowl or some plastic wrap with a vent.
Usually takes about 5 minutes at most. :)
Good luck!

Get yourself a microwave steamer (a few bucks at at housewares store or walmart) and you can steam the broccoli in about 2 minutes. It tastes great and you can still have it crunchy (not mushy, blah).
