As an American, most of the French people I've met have been very nice. I know that politically the two countries have not seen eye-to-eye lately, but I think the French have more reasons for why they have been reticent to jump into things in Iraq than most Americans understand (or try to understand).
The French people I met when I have visited there have been delighted to help me, especially when I try to use my French. I think the "rude" French stereotype has come from the French frustration that Americans visiting their country often refuse to use French to communicate. We do have a tendency to be linguo-centric (if that's a word!).

No offence but there is a general image of the French as arrogant, selfish twats who hate the UK for no real reason - or at least any reason that will stand up in a court of law.
Although I can see and understand (and slightly agree with) the above argument, I'd honestly like to be proven wrong :-)
I don't know any French people. I'd like the chance to meet one and become friends :-)

No French person has ever given me any problems, so I have no reason to dislike them.
Also, a lot of people from the US might seem like ignorant morons who have weird, inexplicable prejudices against French people when they've never met a French person, nor do they know anything about France. We're not all that rude. Sorry about that...

Really, I hate France. I can deal with the people as I know a few nice and worthwhile French. I speak fluent French, but honestly, I can't stand France as a nation. I'm Scottish with American roots, and I don't mean to be rude, but pretty much everyone hates France, but France also hates us, so I suppose it's simply a mutual hatred that cancels itself, out in a way.

Yes i do. I worked there for 8 months and was so ashamed to be English. The French are very polite and the majoirity can speak English or another second language which is more than can said for 99%of English people.

I am with Dawny on this one. I have met some very nice people (including my pen friend of over 30 years) and the majority are very polite (which could be interpreted as chilly rather than cool to Americans!), particularly *si tu essayais une peu de sa langue (mais aussi parce-que c'est "mignons" quand je parle pas correcte!). However, there are bad people everywhere, and I have met some of them too.
You may find some ill-educated people still harking back to the 100 years war, or that some of the French were collaborators in the 2nd world war (neatly forgetting the many maquis who risked their lives or who died to get information on troop movements etc), but how many are PERSONALLY responsible for that. Races, as well as people, grow and change.
* if you try to speak a bit of their language, (but also 'cos it's "cute" when I get it a bit wrong!)

There was a little anti-French sentiment here in the United States for a while there, but personally, I enjoy the French and their history.

France is nice, or it would be without those smell garlic-guzzling Frenchmen there. Get rid of Chirac, stop eating frogs and snails, destroy Renault, Peugot and Citroen, have a wash, and give up on the Garlic. Accept that 'French' fries are actually Belgian, that you are the biggest ponces in the world, don't be so damn rude, and THEN, i'll think about it.

i love french people!
i don't see how one couldn't like the french... most americans have never even been to france, (or out of the country for that matter) so they shouldn't judge. i don't have a single complaint about the way i was treated when i was living in paris for a month.
