Well, not exactly.
The use of language is mainly to communicate. And if you can communicate even with bad spelling and bad grammar, why would that be as important. Maybe we are unnecessarily being bully about using 'u' instead of 'you' when we can easily under
stand the context----
Though of course it makes life easier for everyone if we follow same basic rules so that we are all on same page, but I think we should be flexible enough to let creativity play its role. Thats the way writers come up with new words and spellings...
proof that spelling is not important for a context.... read this paragraph below.... its funny too...

I agree completely.
Unfortunately it goes much further than answering questions on the internet. I believe that for the most part we have stopped teaching grammer in schools. My wife and I do treatment care and have been for the last 7 years. During that time we have had nearly 40 youth, at seperate times, in our home. One of the things that I teach them is that there is a correct and incorrect way to speak. They seem to have no idea that there are rules to writing and speaking. I understand why. I have proof read essays that they have written and they write them just like they would write to a friend. They write things like "so sally was talkin to her peeps and they was like We gotta bust them up." Some of the papers with that kind of writing were already graded by the teacher and not one notation was made, not one point was taken off for incorrect grammer or spelling. Most of our youth spell phonetically. When I read their papers and correct their spelling, they often respond with "what does it matter, you know what I mean."
The more that we distance ourselves and our society from the rules of civilised conduct the more we are going to have these types of problems. When we tell our youth that "anything goes" that is exactly what they believe, "ANYTHING GOES". There are no rules, just say what you think, sleep with who you want to, if someone needs to be punched- do it, if the baby is inconvenient- KILL IT.
There are rules, and they are inseperably connected to the very fabric of our society. There are rules or there are none. It is up to parents to teach their children what they are, even when there are those that would try to convince them otherwise. I am not perfect either, as you can read. The spell check is down at the moment so what you are seeing is my natural inability to spell. I have never been a great speller as I am dislexic, but I have worked very hard to be able to spell the way I do. I dont use this as an excuse, thats one of the other rules we have stopped teaching, "life is tough, everyone struggles and it is up to us to pull up our boots and get it done anyway."

You are not alone! Every once in awhile it builds up in me too and I HAVE to say something, but with age comes wisdom, as well as ability to choose fights wisely. If it looks like a point will be made, I will be one of the first to respond accordingly...usually by first correcting their spelling/grammar. Don't lose your standards, stay strong and don't ever compromise on what's right, whether it's spelling, grammar or morals for that matter. Leading by example is the BEST teacher of all, and if we all had the energy to speak up about every error out there, this would be a very-nearly-perfect world. Take a deep breath, count to ten, and keep on fighting!! RIGHT IS RIGHT!!

You are not alone. Anyone can make a typo, that's understandable. But when it's clear the person simply does not know how to spell (and is too lazy to use the "check spelling feature" and/or does not know proper grammar, it's hard to focus on what they are asking because we get wrapped up in how terribly it is spelled or worded.
It's also a sad commentary on our educational system here in the US. At least non-US citizens (usually) have an excuse. English is probably not their primary language and so many of them do well, imo, making themselves understood at all (esp since most of us here in the US could not do so on a message board in that person's primary langugage).

English/grammar was not easy for me in fact each and every day I struggle with it. I use spell check and it helps with the spelling but sometimes I know the things I want to say don't come out the way I want them to. But I do continue to take classes to hopefully better myself. I was much better in Math and Sciences then any English course, I understand the writing thoughts backwards and stuff because I do it all the time. I did however get A's in all my math and Science classes but just struggled to get a C in English. I still want to be better so that's why I continues to take English courses.

It is important to do the best you can and do it to the best of your ability. Maybe some really don't have the ability for some reason or another. Maybe they are doing their best but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try. It's hard to be critical. I would rather look at the positive things here. I just go on to the next question that I do understand.

I don't think I'd go as far as to say "I"m pissed off", but it does show lack of education when people constantly can't spell. Grammar was very easy for me in school, but for both my husband and my dad, it was tough. And some people just don't care what they look like to others.
Me, on the other hand, am proud of my education and enjoy feeling smarter than most people on here. :)

I agree, although it does depend. I don't expect everyone to utilize proper spelling / grammar / punctuation on Y! Answers. As long as I can read the question, then I have no problem. When it starts to appear as an encrypted message, then I become annoyed.
