Location is the most important factor - always pick closed and isolated areas to put them (away from noise and direct sunlight).
Put them high enough than no cat or dog can easily get it.
The best option is to find a place you can easily see them from afar but the hummingbirds think their are alone.

They are great to have. Either get the Hummingbird food from the store, or just use sugar and water. Once you find a good spot, even in front of a window, they will come back every year to that spot. I've actually been out watering flowers before, and they came right up to me...I guess they liked the red shirt that I was wearing.lol!!

if you put one up the recipe for the "nectar" is 4 to 1 (4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar) You need to boil it, then let it cool before putting it in the feeder. Make sure and change the water at least once a week, sometimes a little more often if it is hot weather. It can ferment in the heat and actually cause the birds to become "drunk" and it could kill them. I would suggest making your own with the above recipe as the stuff you buy in the stores is dyed red and this dye is not good for the birds. The red color of the feeder should be enough color to attract them. Good luck and happy feeding!

Only that they are great places for cats to hang out. I would recommend planting a citrus tree, or some other fragrant flower (like jasmine, honeysuckle, freesia etc). You will be entertained by their appearances, and may actually nest in one of your bushes.
