Okay, so I just came across some forums where people were talking about Cesar (The Dog Whisperer)... Well, there's this website and the guy who runs it (Ed Frawley) likes to "dominate" the dog by choking it until it passes out... He does all kind of stupid crap that I completely disagree with and are down right abusive to dogs.... It's cruelty... Well, these forums were the forums from Ed's website and someone had asked what people think of Cesar. Ed replied and said he likes him b/c he's not afraid to "choke out a dog".... He mentioned what Cesar did and said, "I like the fact that he is not afriad to choke out a dominant aggressive dog - like the aggressive pitbull that took a nap on TV - all you saw was the begining of the fight and then the dog laying on the gound taking a nap with Cesar loosening the nylon choke collar as the dog wakes up." Now I don't believe that Cesar would do something like that... Sooo, my question is, does anyone know if this is actually true?

Heh, yeah, I thought he wouldn't do something like that. I've already read his book, though. =P I got it when it came out and read it in 2 days. =P It's awesome. ^^

Thanks for your answer, Rita. But I know Cesar wouldn't do that to a dog... I mean, raising a dominant dog off his front paws until he calms down is one thing. That's something even /I/ would do if I had to. But choking a dog until it passes out? What if it doesn't wake up again? Then, you've just killed your dog... I mean, I completely agree with you. Some things Ed mentions are okay, and I know sometimes you've gotta be really stern and even smack the dog a time or two to get your point across, but choking a dog 'til he's unconcious is just completely rediculous, as are many other things Ed suggests. Thanks for your answer, though. I appreciate it. =)

Btw, to me, a pinch collar isn't at all a cruel device. I actually used one for my dog who had died March 29, 06. I definately wouldn't compare a prong collar to the unconcious thing Ed does, though. A prong collar isn't /nearly/ as bad as what Ed does. And just b/c Cesar used a prong collar, I highly doubt he'd choke out a dog... In fact, I'm about 99% sure he wouldn't do that. That's not his style, not his method. What I think is that Ed might have mistook what Cesar was doing. Cesar was most likely just putting the dog on his back like he always does when a dog fights. Ed must have thought the dog was unconcious or something b/c the dog was probably just laying there for a bit.... Anyway, thanks again for your answer. I'm glad you didn't come about it in a mean way like most others would have. =P

Not to defend Ed Frawley, but I've got a strong willed German Shepherd, and I had the idea that I could just train with treats and positive methods. Well, I was dead wrong!
I had to curb my dog's dangerous aggression towards other dogs by lifting her front feet off the ground with a training collar, until she calmed down enough to listen to me. Some breeds (like GSDs) require a heavier hand and stronger methods than other breeds.
She is well behaved, knows sit, heel, down, come, out, off, lay down, and a host of other commands. She minds her manners when we pass other dogs, and I'm not afraid to admit that I've hit her (not too hard) on occasion to get her attention, I use a pinch collar on her, and I've followed some of Frawleys recommendations on training. Different methods work on different dogs, and you shouldn't knock it just b/c it isn't something you would use on your dog. I also think that some of his methods are downright cruel, so I don't believe everything he says. His advice, though, saved my dogs life. Dogs are not furry people. They perceive things a whole lot differently, and require different training than we would use on children. Chances are, if Cesar is a good dog trainer, he uses a mixture of positive and negative training (treats and choke/pinch collars). I've watched the show, and I've seen him use a pinch collar, so it wouldn't surprise me if he used the training method you mentioned.

I have read Cesars book and seen the vidoe he produced.
I am sure he does not treat the animals like this.
He takes a dominant role over them but is not abusive in his training methods. What he does works if the person is willing to do the work with the dogs.
Choking a dog until it passes out would not really teach the dog much except to fear the person who does the choking. I do not want a dog to fear me but to understand that I am not going to take and crap off him and that I am the leader and I am the one who will be in charge of what goes on and when. I think that people who abuse animals to get their point across never really get the desired results from the animals they work with.

I dont think so, you may want to buy his book and learn about his style directly from him. My brother has a pitt and he's reading his book, he's always talking about what Cesar says and what Cesar would do. About Cesar chocking the dog unless Cesar was being attacked by that dog and thats a technique I dont know about, but then again Cesar doesent seem to be able to invite an attack from dogs, cause he understands them so well.

Jerks love to act like respected people are "just like them"... They will stretch the truth for their own benefit. Cesar will discipline but not abuse...

You cant always believe what you see on TV.

Cruelty to animals like that is illegal, so I dont think that it is real.
