Ive had two say that to me over the last 4 months.

One, someone i was interested in, I told her I would respect her and not bother her because she hinted she was didnt want to be involved with a guy now.

The other one, a supervisor at work i was chatting about relationships and she was asking me about "guys" in general. I told her that i told my ex not to call me anymore because it always leads to problems.

They both then said the line... and they don't know each other.

Sounds like their impression of your dating stule is that you are either in a monogamous relationship, or you are just friends.
As in, there is no dating you without assuming the girlfriend role.
I think in the first instance, she meant that she wanted to date you, and still be single.
The second was an obsevation, not so much a derogatory statement.
From the info presented it seems that you didn't do anything wrong, and I don't think there is anything wrong with insisting that you date exclusively, or not at all, but maybe dating should not automatically mean relationship.
Perhaps, all three of us have misinterpreted your meaning!

I think what they mean is that you are a not a compromising person. You want all things to go your way. If everything is not as you want it then you dont want anything more to do with that person.
