Really important!!!!! Use UNSCENTED (which means no baking soda or crystals), scoopable - as fine (so it is soft) as you can find. Once you find a brand/kind - stick with it - cats do not like change! The unscented is important because they can smell so much better than we can - and a litter that smells good to us smells overwhelming to them - making them not want to use the box. Not all cats - bit some will be this sensitive.
Everclean is a great litter - a bit more expensive - but it clumps really well so you end up tossing less out. Plus the kitties love it!

I use a biodegradable litter called Swheat Scoop. It is made from natural wheat with no additives. Because it is biodegradable, I can flush it down the toilet which saves having to let it sit in the trash after scooping.
The Swheat Scoop is great for removing odors and smells just like wheat. This means that what little dust there is, isn't a clay dust that gets stuck in your lungs.
And dvm2b must not understand what "odors" are! Because BAKING SODA is NOT an added odor. Baking soda is primarily scentless and is added to absorb and eliminate odor....not create a pleasant one. Try to stick with the facts.
So, if you looking for an alternative litter that is better for the environment, choose a natural litter made of wheat or corn.

Fresh Step - it smells great, clumps well and, most importantly, my 2 kittens have no issues and will go to the bathroom nowhere else. I scoop out all the waste very carefully and completely once a day (twice on the weekends since I'm around more) and add more litter when it's less than 2 inches deep.

When my cats were inside, I used the off brand deodorized clumping litter and used liners. I would scoop (not sift...it leaves ammonia in there) the clumps out. Then I would follow up with a litter box deodorizer and a little more litter. I would change out the liner and litter about once every three weeks. It worked for us.

Feline Pine, the best. It keeps his litter box odor-free (smells like cedar) as long as you change the box once every 2 weeks. It doesn't stick to the cat's feet as bad as the grainy litter (like freshstep). Another plus to this litter is you can flush it down the toilet, it desolves so every day cleaning is a breeze. Not to mention you just shake the box back and forth to expose the dropping for easy removal. Simply the best litter. Check the link below.

I use Tidy Cat for multiple cats (I have 2). I also pick up this Arm n Hammer kitty litter deodorizer...it really helps with the odor.

Arm & Hammer--it's the best out of all the kinds that I've tried (and I've tried a LOT of different brands!!). I have two cats, and it really keeps the smell down and has excellent "clumpoing action". The Multiple Cat kind by them works too, but the regular kind works just as well.

Fresh Step. The clumping kind. I have 14 cats and believe me it is the best. I used to use Tidy Cat Multiple Cats, and it doesn't even compare to Fresh Step.

We use "SOFT PAW" cat litter by 'Bennett Mineral Company' in our cats regular litter pan and "Preferred Pet" Scoopable Cat Litter by 'America's Choice'(A&P) in the electric scoop litter pan. They both seem to work well.
