I currently have no health insurance, hopefully that will change soon. I have swelling in my legs, through some research I've discovered I have pitted edema. Is there anything I can do to treat myself at home until I get insurance. What happens if it goes untreated?

Dont self diagnose!!! The only thing that that will accomplish is scaring yourself!!! Go to a free clinic by your house and have it diagnosed there.... hopefully they can give you some tips on how to treat it and take care of it. Good luck!

First off, pitting edema is a sign of bad circulation usually caused by a heart condition. The doctors will put you on a duiretic medication made to flush out all the excess water you are retaining. Also, there are a certain type of stockings used to push the water back up. I think you would be able to get them without a perscription at a health store. In the mean time... I think you should go to the emergancy room, and get the perscriptions they recommend... THEN PM ME, I know of a medication program that will help you get your meds for free...

Good luck, and don't forget to Pm me!

I all so have pitted edema. Some times the swelling is so bad I can't stand to wear my socks. The doc. put me on a fluid pill to take as needed. If you can some how see your doc. it would be best, possibly knowing you don't have insurance they will work with you to make a payment arrangement and give you samples of meds. that will help. The swelling in your legs could be caused by a number of reasons, poor circulation, blood clot...etc. So it would be best to get to see your doc. Good luck and take care.

You most likely have congestive heart failure. The heart is weak, is not pumping properly, fluid is backing up into your extremities which results in pitted edema. In reality you will treat the edema by treating the heart. Personally I wouldn't wait.
