Be honest - but obviously tailor it to the ages of the kids. My parents were very vague with me when our family dog passes - and I still remember them kind of glossing over it without explaining.

Of course, your childrens ages and their attachment to the dog can make this very difficult. But, this is one of life's lessons, and death is usually first learned by a child through the loss of a pet. Keep it simple, and if they request, have a memorial for the dog. They could very well grieve differently, or not even at all. Children are more resiliant than us adults, so they will be just fine

um tell them truthfully and up front but not carelessly, and then wait to a little while to get a new family dog.

BE OPEN ABOUT IT JUST LET THEM NKOW IN A WAY THEY CAN UNDERSTAND IT WAS THE DOGS TIME TO GO AND THAT HES IN A HAPPY GOOD PLACE NOW

just break it to them. when my dad died when i was 4, my mom told my bros and sis to come in, and she said, kids, dad is dead.
