I read your Question, and a Puppet show immediately popped into my mind. If I was 1 year old, I think I would get a kick out of that. I'm a little older than that, but I still would enjoy one.
on a side note, Would you take a look at about 8 - 10 minutes of this interview with Professor Steven Jones ? It's a 45 minute video and well worth looking at, to its end. At the very least, pass it on to those you care about.

I had an Elmo themed party for my son when he turned 1. I found everything under the sun that was Elmo, I even rented a giant Elmo costume for his dad to wear and be Elmo at the party. The kids loved it. I found almost everything at party city and the rest I got off the internet. It was an awesome party for my lil guy. I got great pictures and alot of memories. Good luck to you. Im sure it will turn out great.

1 year olds are not going to know the difference. I really suggest just getting bright colored plates and cups and blow up a bunch of balloons.
