Mel Gibson and his father are both bigots. I've been waiting for Mel to shoot himself in the foot like this. Whereas his father is very outspoken about his racist views on Jewish people (the Holocaust never happened according to him), Mel has always kept his extreme Catholic views a bit under his hat...until now. I say "extreme" meaning that both Mel and his father reject changes made to Catholicism made during the Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965. To Hutton Gibson concentration camps were "merely work camps" and Holocaust Memorial Museums are "gimmicks to collect money".

I would hardly call the drunk ravings of a bigot "freedom of speech". Racial slurs are racial slurs..end of story. Of course being a big, rich A-list superstar I'm sure Mel will get away with all of this. You and me would be sitting in jail for inciting racial hatred.

Falling off the wagon aside, Mel's true feelings/thoughts have finally been revealed. Hopefully he'll take a good long look at himself in the mirror and educate himself.

Mel Gibson is not a bigot nor is he misunderstood. The things that he has presented have been factual and he has done so rightly. I think the problem lies with the ones who think that he is a bigot. They are the ones that need to gain some understanding.

Wow...I had to find out what Gibson said after reading this question. That was pretty harsh, but at the same time the apologize was very well delivered. I would say that he said something that was totally inappropriate and hateful, then later acknowledged his fault. The only fault I find with the apology statement is not apologizing for how he feels about Jews. I don't agree with his statement and find it very offensive, but then again, I'm not sure what he meant when he said "Jews are responsible for every war." I'm also looking at it from a perspective of someone that's been verbally attacked by a drunk many times. My brother is a perfect example. He loves me to death, but yet when he gets drunk, I'm the perfect target for an occassional "F*ck You!" LOL I still don't know why he selects me out of the entire group, but maybe because I just look at him with shock and then laugh, because it takes me a second or two to realize he's drunk off his behind. Maybe Gibson and my brother should get together every now and then.

From what I've heard, the charges of antisemitic slurs have come mostly from a rag of a report with about as much credibility as the Enquirer. I'll withold judgement on that matter until they can be independently verified by a real newspaper (other than a news organization citing the original report).

As for Gibson, I'm not going to condemn someone just for getting a DUI. People make mistakes, particularly those people with a history of troublesome addiction. It's a problem he needs to work on, but chemical addition is a more difficult problem than most non-addicted people realize.

Taking Mr. Gibson's representations of being an alcoholic his entire adult life at face value, it depends on your point of view.
there's the "in vino veritas" people, who view alcohol as a substance that loosens inhibitions and erases social constraints, hence the imbiber reveals his true self when under the influence.
then there's the "toxic substance" people, who view alcohol as poison, a substance that fundamentally corrupts, and completely changes, the true nature of the individual. Ergo, the drunk you see isn't the true person.
I don't think there are empirical studies on which view is correct-it really comes down to your view.
But I think he's either bigoted, or he isn't. I don't think he was misunderstood-he just either meant what he said(in vino veritas) or didn't(poisoned).

Neither;

Mr. Mel Gibson was expressing his First Amendment to Free Speech.

Mel Gibson is a good GOD-FEARING man. The things he said were absolutely right about the Jews. They don't know Jesus, and so are HEATHENS. They have FORSAKEN their right as the CHOSEN RACE OF GOD.

The GOD OF MOSES will return to SMITE THEM. If they turn from their evil ways and REPENT and ask JESUS to come into their HEART, they will be SAVED!! It's THAT easy!

Alcohol hath loosened the repressed personality and demons within old Mel. It may be that he cut off his nose to spite his face. We shall see if the temple money lenders treat him kindly.

The only thing I will say is that when anyone drinks enough alcohol and the mind loses it's inability to keep itself in check and becomes far less inhibited, the things one believes deep down tend to come out.
